Commander of the 2nd Battalion. Lt-Col Goff was killed by shells while holding an operations group on the afternoon of 15 May in preparation for the attack on Sinagoga. The attack was postponed until 9am the next day. In Fling Our Banner to the Wind (1978), John Coldwell-Horsfall provided a vivid description of Goff’s character, based on his perspective in March 1944 soon after he was appointed second-in-command of the 2nd battalion: “Ion was a lot older than the rest of us, and was a pre-war regular several years beyond Pat’s (Brigadier Scott’s) vintage. Aged forty-two, he had, I think, the wretched assignment of being on the staff in Malta until recently, and in consequence had missed the experience so far of more active operations. He was a very charming man and no one could have given a kinder welcome than he did to me that evening (16 March 1944). In his person, he possessed the ideal temperament for coping with our riflemen.”
