Educated at Ampleforth and Jesus College Cambridge, Major Arthur (Kevin) O’Connor was appointed second-in-command of the London Irish Rifles in March 1943 following the battalion’s battles in the Bou Arada area. He temporarily took over command of the battalion in August 1943 due to the sickness of its commanding officer Rogers. He was killed at 1000 on 28th Oct by shells during the battle for the River Trigno as he had brought up supplies to the Irish Brigade bridgehead north of the river. The official history of the London Irish Rifles described him thus: “Fearless, a charming and delightful personality, he was held in high esteem by everyone. The great work he did for the battalion he loved so much will live after him. The cross on his soldier’s grave beside the banks of the Trigno bears the simple epitaph: “A Gallant Gentleman.”
