Capt Hanna, who was D Company Commander, died in the attack on Centuripe. William Hanna had been born in Armagh in 1921 and was the youngest of three brothers, the other two boys being Robert and James. William Hanna began his army career at Sandhurst in July 1939 and was commissioned into the Royal Ulster Rifles (RUR) soon after the outbreak of war. During early 1940, 2nd Lieutenant Hanna joined up with the RUR at their depot in Northern Ireland. Hanna was posted to the Faughs on 13 May 1943 after being posted to the British North African Force as a reinforcement. He was promoted to Captain and made second-in-command of A Company. Hanna took over command of D Company after the Tunisian campaign.

Major O’Farrell was OC of Support Company killed by mortar fire crossing the Salso river. O’Farrell was commissioned into the Faughs and posted to the first battalion in early 1939. He commanded the carrier platoon until the Faughs were evacuated from Dunkirk. O’Farrell was awarded the Military Cross for courage and leadership in Belgium and France. He then commanded Headquarters company until January 1941 when he was made battalion adjutant. In early 1943, O’Farrell was appointed staff captain with the Irish Brigade. He rejoined the Faughs as major just before the invasion of Sicily. O’Farrell was killed when the Faughs’ battalion HQ was shelled around 1300 during crossing of the River Simeto in Sicily.

Major Peter Robert Savage was the second son of Ernest Arthur and Lilian Savage of Upper Warlingham, Surrey and husband of Rita Mildred Savage. He went to Oundle School in Northamptonshire and was subsequently employed by Whitebread. Savage was commissioned into the Royal Ulster Rifles on attachment to the London Rifles in 1939. Attached to 6 Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in June 1943, Savage commanded C company which was called to the assistance of Royal Irish Fusiliers on the afternoon of 5 August following the crossing of the Simeto River. During the night, Savage was shot accidentally by a fusilier of the Faughs, who mistook his identity.

Lt Bolton was killed in the pursuit towards Randazzo. He joined the Faughs in December 1942 after being commissioned. Bolton was posted temporarily to The Sherwood Foresters but rejoined the Faughs at the end of the Tunisian campaign. He was initially a platoon commander in A Company but was transferred to B Company when it lost most of its officers.

Major Garratt, commander of B Company of the Faughs, was wounded in the pursuit towards Randazzo. Garratt had been commissioned into the Royal Ulster Rifles on 30 August 1923. He became a reservist in 1926. He was in the US when the war began and returned to serve with the RUR in France. After staff appointments. Garratt returned to the RUR and spent seven months with the London Irish Rifles. He volunteered for service and was attached to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Garratt joined the Faughs on 26 April and was made commander of B Company.
