The attack was postponed until 9am the next day. In Fling Our Banner to the Wind (1978), John Coldwell-Horsfall provided a vivid description of Goff’s character, based on his perspective in March 1944 soon after he was appointed second-in-command of the 2nd battalion: “Ion was a lot older than the rest of us, and was a pre-war regular several years beyond Pat’s (Brigadier Scott’s) vintage. Aged forty-two, he had, I think, the wretched assignment of being on the staff in Malta until recently, and in consequence had missed the experience so far of more active operations. He was a very charming man and no one could have given a kinder welcome than he did to me that evening (16 March 1944). In his person, he possessed the ideal temperament for coping with our riflemen.”
