War Diary, 2/18th London Regiment – April 1917


1st April – K Sector, north of Lake Ardzan.
The Bttn relieved the 8th South Wales Borderers on the night 1/2 April 1917 in K Sector north of Lake Ardzan. Relief commenced 1930 hours and completed at 0100 hours 2/4/17.
One Standing Patrol sent out on night 1/2 April 1917 during relief. Nothing to report.
Special Vigilance ordered until further notice.


2nd April – K Sector.
Bttn in trenches.
2 Standing Patrols sent out in front of works AK2 and AK$. Nothing to report.
Patrols remained out from dusk to dawn.
1 officer (Capt Peckham) transferred to Malta. 1 OR evacuated sick to CCS.


3rd April – K Sector.
3 Standing Patrols sent out from dusk to dawn in front of AK2 and AK4 and at point 1164/1773. Nothing to report.
14 ORs joined unit from Base. 1 OR struck off strength RSM commissioned in 1st Leinster Regiment.


4th April – K Sector.
3 Standing Patrols sent out as on 3/4/17.


5th April – K Sector.
3 Standing Patrols as for 4/4/17.


6th April – K Sector.
Enemy fired 100 phosgene gas shells at HQ (Back). 2 slight casualties but Box respirators found to work admirably. Very still atmosphere. No wind.


7th April – K Sector.
3 ORs evacuated sick to 28 CCS.
3 ORs evacuated to United Kingdom (Officer Cadet Unit).


8th April – K Sector.
9 ORs joined unit from Base.
5 ORs evacuated sick to 28 CCS.


9th April – K Sector.
Reconnoitring patrol of 2 officers and 5 ORs (B Coy) left our lines at 2200 hours, returned 0100 hours. Nothing to report.
1 Officer (2/Lt Burke) and 12 ORs joined unit from Base.


10th April – K Sector.
5 ORs evacuated sick to 28 CCS.
1 OR evacuated wounded (gas).
1 OR evacuated wounded (GSW).


11th April – K Sector.
4 ORs evacuated sick to 28 CCS.
1 OR to UK, underage.
12th April – K Sector.
2 ORs transferred to 180 TM Battery.
1 mule died.


13th April – K Sector.
5 ORs evacuated sick to 28 CCS.


14th April – K Sector.
3 ORs evacuated sick to 28 CCS.


15th to 17th April – K Sector.

18th April – K Sector.
3 ORs evacuated sick to 28 CCS.
19th April – K Sector.
1 Officer struck off strength to No 9 Army Entrenching Bttn (Lt Tyler).


20th to 22nd April – K Sector.

3 ORs evacuated sick to 28 CCS.
1 OR evacuated wounded.


24th April – K Sector.
2/20th Bttn London Regiment carried out a raid on enemy lines at point 1148/1777, jumping off from 2/18th Bttn’s lines at point 1164/1174.
Heavy reciprocal bombardment. Our casualties – 1 OR killed, 6 OR wounded.


25th April – K Sector.
3 Protective Patrols out from dusk to dawn.
10 ORs evacuated sick to 28 CCS.


26th April – K Sector.
3 Protective Patrols out from dusk to dawn.
5 ORs evacuated sick to 28 CCS.


27th to 30th April – K Sector.
3 Protective Patrols out from dusk to dawn.
