He was married to Annie and came from Killann, County Wexford.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"912\" src=\"https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-72.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23901\" style=\"width:406px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-72.png 624w, https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-72-205x300.png 205w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>According to the CWGC records, when he died on 11 January 1945, Michael Foley was aged 48, a remarkably old age for a servicemen on active duty.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irishbrigade.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Michael-Foley-Buriel-Italy-1945-300x234.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-98226\" style=\"width:590px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>On review, it seems that Rifleman Foley was the oldest man who had died whilst serving with the Irish Brigade and in fact was the oldest man, listed by CWGC as serving with British Army with the rank of \u201cRifleman\u201d and buried outside the British Isles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We continue to remember Michael Foley, one of the few men born in the 19th century who served with the Irish Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have been contacted by the family of 7010933 Rifleman Michael Foley who served with the 2nd Battalion London Irish Rifles (2 LIR) in Italy.
