{"id":21386,"date":"2026-01-07T17:10:40","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T17:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/?page_id=21386"},"modified":"2026-04-14T15:47:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T15:47:23","slug":"anthony-addis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/index.php\/second-world-war\/38-irish-brigade-1942-1947\/roll-of-honour-2\/roll-of-honour-adriatic-apennines-october-1943-to-january-1944\/anthony-addis\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthony Addis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>We received details of the life and service career of Fusilier Anthony Addis, from William Best, the husband of Anthony&#8217;s niece.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"713\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21387\" style=\"width:321px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image.png 713w, https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-209x300.png 209w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 713px) 100vw, 713px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Fusilier Addis served with the Royal Irish Fusiliers in Italy and died in hospital of wounds suffered at the River Trigno at the end of October 1943.&nbsp; He would be re-interred a year later at Bari CWGC Cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Tony (as he in later years called himself) was born on 1st July 1915 in the Parish of Knocknadona, Lisburn, Co. Antrim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 17th Oct 1940, now living in Oxfordshire, England, he enlisted into the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 12th August 1943, he embarked for North Africa, arriving there on 24th August. From this date onwards, he in a &#8220;Reinforcement Pool&#8221; during which he was transferred to the London Irish Rifles and finally to the 1st Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5th Oct 1943 &#8211;&nbsp; Landed at Termoli on the Adriatic coast of Italy, having travelled in Landing Craft (by sea) from Barletta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>19th Oct 1943&nbsp; &#8211; During a lull in fighting, he is able to compose and send a letter to his sister, Florence (and her husband Tommy).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irishbrigade.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/P1080870-Copy-2-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-101569\" style=\"width:490px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>22nd Oct 1943 &#8211; On this day, whilst attempting to cross the Trigno River, he is mortally wounded and is eventually transported back to an Army Hospital in Foggia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>26th Oct 1943 &#8211; Tony dies and is buried in Foggia Civil Cemetery (his first burial).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>28th Sep 1944 &#8211; Tony has been exhumed at Foggia and reburied at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cwgc.org\/find-records\/find-war-dead\/casualty-details\/2202909\/anthony-addis\/\">Bari Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery<\/a> (his second and final resting place).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irishbrigade.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/20231026_0558422-2-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-101578\" style=\"width:445px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>HERE RESTS HIS HEAD UPON THE LAP OF EARTH, A YOUTH TO FORTUNE AND TO FAME UNKNOWN<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We received details of the life and service career of Fusilier Anthony Addis, from William Best, the husband of Anthony&#8217;s niece.
