{"id":21293,"date":"2025-12-30T15:03:48","date_gmt":"2025-12-30T15:03:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/?page_id=21293"},"modified":"2026-01-05T12:22:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T12:22:28","slug":"joseph-whelan","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/index.php\/second-world-war\/38-irish-brigade-1942-1947\/roll-of-honour-2\/roll-of-honour\/joseph-whelan\/","title":{"rendered":"Joseph Whelan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lance Sergeant Joseph Whelan<\/strong>\u00a0was killed at or near\u00a0Hill 286\u00a0on the evening of 20th\/21st January 1943.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the CWGC, he was the husband of Elizabeth Whelan, of Dublin, Irish Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.irishbrigade.co.uk\/media\/whelan.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Update as of July 2020 \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We received a nice note from James Whelan, the nephew of Joseph and Francis Whelan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cMany thanks for this. The records I\u2019ve seen say my uncle\u2019s name was on Face 30 of the memorial, but this is the first image I\u2019ve seen.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Unfortunately, I haven\u2019t got any further info I could send for Joseph, but I have got some things for his younger brother Francis, who was killed in Malaya on 8 May 1949.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>There are two photos, each showing Francis on the right.
