1400<\/strong> Enemy move observed at Pt 323 (033273).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1400<\/strong> Bttn now in counter attack role \u2013 any part of the Brigade front. On receipt of the code word \u2018Blimey\u2019, coys will be ready within 2 hours to move forward in fighting order less mules. S Coy to be provided with 20 mules. Much enemy activity observed on Mulineto road during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1715<\/strong> Bttn HQ 2 Innisks heavily mortared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OC 214 Field Company RE visits Brigade. They are to take over the maintenance of the San Apollinare-Cuviola road in support of 38 Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A note on the situation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appalling weather has brought the advance of the Fifth Army virtually to a standstill. Any major advance was out of the question and the majority of divisions who had fought hard during the past two months were in need of a rest. The division was therefore ordered to take up defensive positions gained in the recent fighting. This meant the inevitable build up of supplies and ammunition \u2013 the slight rearrangement of positions and aggressive patrolling to determine the enemy\u2019s positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the enemy positions were obtained either by our patrols or from PW, the harassing fire tasks could be worked out and timed accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Supply Problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other great factor to be considered was our supply route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last mile of the track to Brigade HQ ran down a steep galley and, after the heavy rains, became impassable, even to jeeps. 214 Field Company RE were sent up to take over the maintenance of this road and, assisted by labour from the battalions, to put it in order again. The main trouble to be overcome was the drainage of the water. This would be overcome by the construction of culverts and then the majority of the track would have to be built up with a surface of stones and rubble. In the meantime, the track was ordered to be closed to all traffic except mules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2030<\/strong> Enemy patrol, strength one platoon, seen approaching Casa Salara 035263.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrol engaged and dispersed by own mortars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same enemy patrol was engaged at odd intervals during the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Point 362 spasmodically shelled during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SP gun heavily shelled track 029258. One man killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enemy seen digging at 035274, engaged by mediums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1730<\/strong> Ambush patrol from 2 Innisks goes out to 037261.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This patrol reported nothing during the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF \u2013 SAN APOLLINARE 005230.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

C Coy cooks\u2019 tents displays eight shrapnel holes. The only casualty being a box containing two rum jars, one of which was broken (the empty one). Mule track in shocking condition; mules stuck belly deep and drowning, just short of Gesso Cemetery, had to be shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harassing fire tasks on known enemy targets carried out during the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF \u2013 SAN APOLLINARE 005230.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our men had to replace the muleteers who, with the mules, are exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 Innisks \u2013 CASONE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0600<\/strong> Heavy shelling of bttn area. Spaduro House hit with mortar bombs but no casualties. The CO paid a visit to the coys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1030<\/strong> Enemy gun registers three direct hits on Spaduro House. It is decided to evacuate artillery OPs from this house and use Point 387 as an OP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2000<\/strong> Enemy shelling C Coy area. No casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1730<\/strong> Recce patrol 2 Innisks goes out to 037266.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifteen enemy seen at 036266 and two MGs seen firing from 037266. Approaches along the ridge are wet still, but drying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1925<\/strong> Warning Order issued. 2 LIR are to relieve 2 Innisks in present locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 LIR to take over command of sector including C Coy, 1 RIrF, Mortar Platoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1300<\/strong> CO, IO and Intelligence Sgt with coy guides, proceeded on recce to 2 Innisks\u2019 positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1730<\/strong> CO\u2019s recce party returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1830<\/strong> CO\u2019s O Group at Bttn HQ \u2013 Bttn to move off on 6 Nov from coy positions and rendezvous at Brigade HQ at San Apollinare, thence to move at 1730 hrs by \u2018personnel\u2019 track to 2 Innisks\u2019 positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Order of March \u2013 G Coy, E Coy and MMG Platoon, H Coy, Bttn HQ and Mortar Platoon. G Coy to relieve right hand coy with one platoon in eastern Salara (034263) and remainder around track junction 029259. E Coy to relieve left forward coy in area Spaduro House (029263). H Coy in reserve at western Salara (022263). Bttn in Casone farm at 023258. Mortar Platoon to take over 2 Innisks\u2019 mortars with forward coys. Forward positions to be dug by 2 Innisks for 2 LIR\u2019s MMGs. All ammunition, tools, water cans etc to be taken over from 2 Innisks. CO\u2019s Recce Group and Coy Commanders to move forward at 0900 hrs 6 November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6th\u00a0November<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0830<\/strong> Brigade Commander attends Divisional Commander\u2019s Conference. The main subject discussed was that of reliefs. Brigades were ordered to work out a roster for three battalions. The Brigade Commander wished the battalions to spend 8 days in the line whereas the other two brigades wanted their battalions to spend four days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The roster was made out so that a battalion, after spending eight days in the line, would then be in reserve for a certain period and then spend a certain period in a rest period, part of that time being at the Divisional Rest Camp in Castel del Rio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final arrangements were as follows: A battalion would spend eight days in the line, four days in reserve to another brigade, four days at Castel del Rio, eight days in Brigade reserve and then back into the line again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A small Rest Camp was opened up at Belvedere (9718) for enabling a small number of men to get a rest and opportunities to get dry and have a bath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1700<\/strong> 2 LIR leave San Apollinare to move forward and take over 2 Innisks\u2019 positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2200<\/strong> Reliefs proceeded extremely well and all now complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 Innisks now on way back. Transport was laid on to take them from Sasaleone to Castel del Rio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2300<\/strong> Warning Order: C Coy 1 RIrF will now be relieved by a coy 2 LIR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D Coy 1 RIrF will move up and take up positions at Casa Salara 022263 u\/c 2 LIR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This change in policy was due to the Conference at Divisional HQ and the changes due to the new system of reliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In accordance with relief plan, 2 Innisks move forward to area Travellata 996273 from the rest area in Castel del Rio and come under command 11 Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recce diversion on Gesso mule track supplying A\/Tk guns and Spinella. There are now two jeeps and seven dead mules in the mud on one stretch of track 25 yards long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Party at Bttn HQ for officers and sgts of B and C Coys. Major R Titteton on leave to get married.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0800 <\/strong>Sitrep: shelling and mortaring of battalion area during night. Recce Patrol to Point 358 report track leading to Casa Sillaro 018293 to be very narrow with an almost sheer drop of 20-30 feet on either side. Movement head from Sillaro house and area of point. Patrol reached there just before enemy and drove them off. Estimated strength of enemy about 12. Section of knoll 015290 found about 30 in occupation and were fired on, then tried to work round to left and discovered another 8 enemy in gully between knoll and Sillaro and were again fired at. Section patrol on right of culvert engaged enemy patrol about 150 yards forward of bridge 017288. Patrol withdrew leaving holding party at house 015287.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1000<\/strong> CO proceeded to Brigade HQ for orders regarding future move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1100<\/strong> Smoke screen coming up the valley to envelope bttn area. Bttn casualties so far \u2013 1 killed and 10 wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1800 <\/strong>E Coy\u2019s forward house being heavily shelled. Bren gun knocked out. Orders given for house to be held despite shelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Intermittent shelling of brigade area during the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Attempts by 1 Division during the night to dislodge the enemy from Monte Castellara failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1700<\/strong> One PoW captured by 2 LIR at 009294. Identification 10 Coy, 3 Para Regiment (1 Para Division).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1840<\/strong> Patrol from 2 LIR to knoll 015290 captured an enemy listening post of two men. Identification 7 Coy, 289 Regiment (98 Division).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2015<\/strong> Strong enemy attack \u2013 probably a coy \u2013 attacked along a ridge at 012306 on 1 RIrF positions. Engaged by MG fire. Enemy threw grenades and fired schmeissers. Attack dispersed by mortar DF. Situation cleared up by 2159 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Standing Patrol on Point 312 013307 approached by two enemy. Patrol opened up and was immediately fired upon from enemy positions around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Patrol to Point 166 019303 only got to within 200 yards of the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
