1st June<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By about midnight on the night of 31st May\/1st June, the 6 Innisks were finally established around Le Cinque Vie 5237. They patrolled forward during the night and also at first light to Point 267 5338 and discovered that various tracks were mined but made no contact with the enemy who had retreated the previous evening from his positions on Il Castello in full retreat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 Brigade went through advancing on Torrice and 8 Indian Division advanced towards Veroli, gradually ousting the 6 Innisks from their front line positions. The Brigade was told that they were now in reserve and arrangements were quickly made for mobile cinemas and bathing arrangements and a clean change of clothes was quickly organised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0615<\/strong> Battalion moved to area 519338 in support of the other two bttns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Order of march D Coy followed by C, A, And B Coys in that order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0830<\/strong> Bttn was concentrated in a small area and billeted as far as possible in houses on either side of the road to Ripi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2000<\/strong> Bttn placed at four hours\u2019 notice to move as 6 Innisks cleaning up of their area had been successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 Innisks \u2013 RIPI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weather fine and sunny. Visibility very good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0730<\/strong> Reveille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bttn spent most of the day cleaning weapons, checking admin points and generally resting after its recent operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the evening most of the troops had found some source of wine at local farm houses and the day was concluded in a most satisfactory manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\/Capt PS Anderson joined the bttn and relinquished the rank of T\/Capt on posting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A restful day for the brigade. The advance towards Rome and to the hills in the north west continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bttn placed at six hours\u2019 notice as the brigade is now in reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 Innisks \u2013 RIPI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weather fine and warm with light wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0730<\/strong> Reveille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adjutant and IO visited Lieut Col HEN Bredin at the 2nd General Hospital, Caserta and found him quite cheerful and very optimistic about returning to his bttn in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1100<\/strong> MBU arrived in the bttn area and was established by a plentiful supply of well water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1330<\/strong> MBU opened for business and was kept very busy until closing time at 1900 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bttn was left to its own resources during the day and most people took the opportunity of bring their mail up to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An open air cinema show was given in the evening and was much appreciated as this was the first show the bttn had seen for many weeks. The show was also enjoyed by a number of civilians, who collected at the rear of troops \u2013 some of these had never before seen a film show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1100<\/strong> Bttn Promotion Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1400<\/strong> CO\u2019s O Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1800<\/strong> CO attends Brigadier\u2019s conference on W\/T Communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1900<\/strong> Battle Patrol disbanded and personnel returned to rifle coys. Reason given \u2013 that the patrol could not be used in swift advance, only in static warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3rd June<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brigade rests and reorganises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brigade Commander informed that 78 Division is now in Corps reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lt Col Maxwell, 6 Innisks, relinquishes command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Major J Kerr assumes command at the rank of local Lt-Col.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1730<\/strong> Admin. Bttn church service was held in area of Bttn HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 Innisks \u2013 RIPI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weather \u2013 fine and sunny. Light cloud, visibility good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0730<\/strong> Reveille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0930<\/strong> RC Church service was held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1330<\/strong> MBU opened up again for members of the bttn, who had not been able to get there the day before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1500<\/strong> Lieut Colonel Maxwell was instructed by Brigade HQ to report to them with his full kit and batman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Major John Kerr came from B Echelon to take over command of the bttn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day was quiet and uneventful and all troops were satisfied to be left to their own resources in their coy areas \u2013 where they were comfortably established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the evening, a message came from the Brigade HQ giving the bttn an area to be swept in conjunction with the other bttns of the brigade, for small parties of enemy believed to have been left behind by the retreating enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1430<\/strong> Officers\u2019 and NCOs\u2019 parade for lecture on tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1600<\/strong> B Echelon arrives in bttn area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2230<\/strong> Tanks of 3 Hussars (9 Armoured Brigade) ceased to be attached and left bttn area for other operational duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4th <\/strong>June<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civilians reported that there were still a few enemy in hiding in the various houses around Boville Ernica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF and 6 Innisks organised areas of responsibility and searched the surrounding countryside, but made no contact, although they learnt that some enemy had left the night before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2130<\/strong> Warning order received from 78 Division to be detailed by 38 Brigade to be under command of 9 Armoured Brigade for special Task Force in the Paliano-Tivoli direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2200<\/strong> 1 RIrF warned to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0600<\/strong> Admin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0900<\/strong> Bttn O Group. Orders to sweep area east of present location as snipers were known to be in area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0930<\/strong> Rifle companies crossed start line and swept areas allotted to them Warning order. 0773.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1345<\/strong> Reports from companies \u2013 nothing found. Rumour by civilians that 20 Germans had occupied a house until 2 June but was unconfirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 Innisks \u2013 RIPI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weather bright and clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0730<\/strong> Reveille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1030<\/strong> Coys were given areas at 530390\u2013570370\u2013570350\u2013530350 in their search for the enemy. Soft hats were worn and minimum of equipment carried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No enemy were encountered but a number of abandoned weapons were found \u2013 mostly damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 530360, trees were found to have been found blown across the track and Teller Mines laid in the vicinity. A large quantity of explosives was left in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although no enemy was found, most people managed to get some eggs (and occasional chickens) from the houses they had searched, as gifts from the people and were well satisfied with their day\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1700<\/strong> A C of E church service was held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0900<\/strong> Bttn bathing at MBU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2130<\/strong> ENSA film show in bttn area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5th June<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commander 1 RIrF reports to 9 Armoured Brigade. 1 RIrF warned to move before 1000 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF move to concentration area just the other side of Frosinone on Route 6. Delayed considerably by excessive traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1800<\/strong> Reports received that the French have captured Tivoli. This town was to have been the objective of the Task Force comprising of 3 Hussars and 1 RIrF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2000<\/strong> Task Force cancelled. 1 RIrF to move to a better concentration area G 439395.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0700<\/strong> CO to conference with Commander 9th <\/sup>Armoured Brigade. Orders issued. Bttn to be part of task force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1100<\/strong> Bttn left for start point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1230<\/strong> Bttn concentrated in area, start point 455380.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1700<\/strong> Permission granted to find a more suitable area for the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1800<\/strong> Recce by company commander and bttn moved into company areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2130<\/strong> Stand down. Task force has been cancelled as French have reached objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 Innisks \u2013 RIPI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weather fine in the morning, light showers in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bttn continued to enjoy its rest, but followed the news and Intelligence Section maps with keen interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1400<\/strong> News was received that Rome had fallen and we knew it would soon be our turn to continue to chase after the enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It had been arranged for the Brigade Pipe Band to play to the bttn but this was postponed for twenty four hours and the Bttn Band was to play instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1700<\/strong> Heavy rain set in and this too had to be postponed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1600<\/strong> CO addressed a parade of Signal Platoon and congratulated them on their good work during the recent operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

6th June<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quiet day. All units in Brigade Group rest in their own areas. 1 RIrF remain in same location. CO 1 RIrF visits Brigade Commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0800<\/strong> Admin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1600<\/strong> Bttn placed at twenty four hrs notice. B Echelon called forward<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 Innisks \u2013 RIPI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weather cloudy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0730<\/strong> First news of the invasion was brought into the bttn and many were inclined to be sceptical. Nevertheless the next radio broadcast was eagerly awaited and great excitement prevailed when it was found to be true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prepared maps of the Intelligence Section were hurried set up and hourly news flashes were published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1800<\/strong> The Bttn assembled on a bank overlooking the road near Bttn HQ to see a performance by the Brigade Pipe Band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Brigadier, Brigade Major and other well known officers from Brigade HQ were also present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The band gave an excellent performance which lasted for 45 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the performance, the Brigadier stayed to dinner with the CO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1100<\/strong> Bttn bathing at MBU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7th June<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1500<\/strong> Warning Order received to prepare to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brigade Commander ordered to go to Divisional Commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1700<\/strong> Brigade Commander receives verbal orders. Brigade to concentrate north of Rome area 747850. 1 RIrF to move at 2000 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1800<\/strong> Brigade Commander and small Tac Brigade goes to HQ 1 RIrF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2000<\/strong> 1 RIrF and Brigade Tac move to concentration area north of Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1800<\/strong> Bttn ordered to move. Recce party to leave at 1930 hrs. Bttn at 2000 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing of importance occurred during the day \u2013 although the usual keen interest was shown in the news and the maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1830<\/strong> Recce party was warned to go forward to recce another concentration area north of Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1900<\/strong> Sergeants\u2019 Mess held a party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orders for the bttn move on the 8th were issued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0800<\/strong> Bttn at 24 hours\u2019 notice to move forward to concentration area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1200<\/strong> Bttn at four hours\u2019 notice. Recce at 1 hour notice to RV at 439393.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1400<\/strong> Jeep blown up by mine. 4 ORs killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1900<\/strong> Bttn warned for move forward at 0530 hrs the following morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0200<\/strong> 1 RIrF in concentration area. HQ at F 660820.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0300<\/strong> Remainder of Brigade Group \u2013 due to leave at 0600 hrs \u2013 now to leave at 0800 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0800<\/strong> Brigade Group moves for concentration area north of Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The amount of traffic on the road was inconceivable and in some cases in the Brigade Group, it took seven hours to go from Ripi to Frosinone a distance of some seven miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0830<\/strong> Recce parties now warned to recce brigade concentration area. HQ at A 765027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1700<\/strong> 2 LIR begin to arrive in concentration area, after being over nine hours on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2100<\/strong> One platoon 1 RIrF despatched to guard a hospital in Civita Castellana in which are 580 patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0200<\/strong> Bttn passed through Rome and concentrated in the above area for the night 7th\/8th June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0700<\/strong> Bttn ordered to area Rignano as battle is moving very fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1200<\/strong> Bttn left at 1200 hrs and arrived at 1245 hrs in new area 765027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1400<\/strong> One platoon B Coy detached to guard 500 enemy prisoners in Castellana hospital 6810.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2200<\/strong> D Coy warned to stand by to leave area at 0600 hrs on detachment to a task force under command of 9th Armoured Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 Innisks \u2013 RIPI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weather warm and sunny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0430<\/strong> Reveille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final preparations for the move were made and coys made their own way to the village of Ripi (520340), which was the nearest point to which TCVs could be brought owing to demolitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bttn Pipe Band played on the march to the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0900<\/strong> Bttn moved off in transport which had been lined up in the village square \u2013 two hours later than the time given in the Brigade March Table owing to the congestion on the roads \u2013 everyone was going to Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first few hours of the journey saw very little progress but later the roads cleared and normal timings were made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone was pleased to see the very large number of enemy vehicles that had been knocked out along Route 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2000<\/strong> The bttn passed through Rome, which was well policed and no traffic was allowed to stop, with the result that the expected traffic blocks did not occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2130<\/strong> The bttn, now on Route 3, came to a temporary halt and at the same time, enemy aircraft dropped flares over the area. Fortunately no bombs were dropped in the area \u2013 the main activity being further west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2200<\/strong> Column moved off again and this time, the bttn had an unbroken run to the new area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2330<\/strong> Bttn was met by the guides from the advance party and were assembled in the area 770046.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0530<\/strong> Bttn em-bused, ready to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0730<\/strong> Bttn move off. Order of march \u2013 Bttn HQ, H, E, F, G and S Coys. Route \u2013 Frosinone, along Route 6 to Valmontone through south east suburbs of Rome, then north through Rignano to brigade concentration area at San Oreste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2100<\/strong> Bttn arrive in new area. Bttn HQ in farm 771036.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

9th June<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0200<\/strong> Brigade Group now complete in concentration area. Brigade HQ \u2013 A752032, 2 LIR \u2013 A 771036, 1 RIrF \u2013 A 765027, 6 Innisks \u2013 A 755043, 17 Field Regiment \u2013 A 770033, 66 Medium Regiment \u2013 A 7603 (this regiment now in support of 38 Brigade), 254 A\/Tk Battery A 770041.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 LIR dispatch one platoon to guard Kesselring\u2019s old HQ at San Oreste A 7804.One coy 1 RIrF now under command 3 KOH for special task. This task to secure bridge across River Tiber leading to Magliano A 7519 to prevent it being destroyed. This task was accomplished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1200<\/strong> Civilians report enemy patrols crossing River Tiber into Ponzano and Nazzano. As a protective measure to guard a completely open flank, one coy 2 LIR ordered to occupy San Oreste. One battery 17 Field Regiment ordered to go into action and one platoon D Support Group Mortars to take up positions near San Oreste and cover river bank by fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1800<\/strong> Warning Order received for remainder of 1 RIrF to come under command 9 Armoured Brigade for special task force to advance to Orte A6730.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advancing north of Rome.<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0600<\/strong> D Coy left for RV with remainder of force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1700<\/strong> C Coy warned to move at 0600 on 10th June as part of another force under command B Squadron 3 KOH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2200<\/strong> Bttn warning order to move at 0900 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 Innisks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0100<\/strong> The bttn was soon settled in its new area and everybody was glad to relax after the long (but interesting) journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

News was brought to Bttn HQ of an accident that had occurred on the journey when an American truck ran into one of our carriers. The carrier was damaged and 3 ORs were taken to hospital with injuries; none were found to be serious, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0800<\/strong> Reveille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bttn spent the day resting and cleaning up generally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Great interest was taken in Kesselring\u2019s HQ, which could be plainly seen on Monte Soratte, but which was still burning, the enemy having set fire to it before leaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1700<\/strong> The Brigadier visited the bttn to see if everyone was settled in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rest of the night was quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0900<\/strong> One platoon of H Coy detailed to take guard at Kesselrings\u2019s former HQ in San Oreste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1100<\/strong> G Coy moved into village San Oreste. E Coy moved to left flank of G Coy, taking up positions on ridge Monte Soratte (7605).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Information: Retreating enemy divisions \u2013 HG Division, 4 Para Division and 15 PG Division \u2013 moving north on 78 Division\u2019s right flank; Rive Tiber being dividing line between 78 Division and enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

G and E Coys now in defensive positions as safe guard against possible enemy patrols crossing the Tiber. 6 SA Armoured Division and 9 British Armoured Brigade north east of 78 Division in area of Viterbo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

10th June<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0700<\/strong> 1 RIrF with 3 KOH commence operation. They advanced through Civita Castellana and then turned north towards Orte. They were subjected to long range shelling and from guns believed to be north of Magliano. Air support called for to neutralise these enemy guns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1100<\/strong> CO visited C Squadron, 3 KOH, in order to tie up various points for cooperation in future battles \u2013 especially the inter communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A large 3 ton trailer had been noticed at Kesselring\u2019s HQ on the way to 3 KOH and, after the visit, the CO and IO went back and collected the trailer, pulling it back with the jeep. This considerably relieved the B Echelon vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kesselring\u2019s HQ provided good sport for souvenir hunters and amongst these was the Bttn MTO, who found what appeared to be good wine. He presented a bottle to the CO, who fortunately read the label more carefully and was saved greater disappointment by discovering in time that it was only distilled water for \u2018topping up\u2019 batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1500<\/strong> CO called Coy Commanders together and went over the points discussed with the tank Squadron Commanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1700<\/strong> Brigadier paid a social visit to the bttn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0400<\/strong> Heavy rain started and it was soon apparent that the bttn, which was sleeping in the open without bivouacs, was in for a wet night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0800<\/strong> Bivouacs were issued and attempts were made to get clothes dry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rain continued at intervals until 1600 hrs and the bttn did not have a very happy day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1700<\/strong> Brigadier visited the bttn and brought with him that the brigade would be moving early on 12th June to the area of Civitella. He also said that the party from each bttn, which was arranged to visit the Pope in the Vatican City would still go on and rejoin the bttn in the new locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Situation \u2013 fighting is going on in Bagnoregio A 4448 and to the north east of Civitella. Own troops reached Civitella rd 386607 last night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Irish Brigade is received by the Pope in special audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Bttn roused at 0430 hrs \u2013 breakfast at 0530 hrs and everybody was em-bused by 0630 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0630<\/strong> The party from the bttn (mainly Catholics), who were to visit the Pope, left for Rome, taking with them the Bttn Pipe Band. In Rome, the three Bttn bands were Brigaded and played at St Peter\u2019s, whilst the representatives from the bttn paraded before the Pope, who expressed great pleasure and the great crowd that collected showed great enthusiasm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This party was then left to their own resources in Rome until 1600 hrs when they left to return to their respective bttns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0645<\/strong> Bttn column moved off and passed the Brigade SP on time ie 0715 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The journey was a good one and halts were only occasioned by the worst diversions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    C Coy had their mobile German filed kitchen on tow and this provided a welcome cup of tea for all those near enough in the column to collect it during the short halts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1530<\/strong> The bttn arrived complete in the area (4842) and locations were Bttn HQ and all coys 483426. B Echelon being in San Angelo (489419).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1630<\/strong> The bttn was ordered to send one coy to protect the right flank of brigade by occupying the village of Graffignano A 5242 and this job was made enjoyable by the hospitality of the villagers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0700<\/strong> Bttn leave area San Oreste (in TCVs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1100<\/strong> Bttn HQ arrives farm 505441. Coys in some areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1530<\/strong> Divisional Commander visits Bttn HQ to confer with CO on immediate move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1600<\/strong> CO\u2019s O Group. Information: Brigade at 516448 demolished. Enemy not in occupation of village Civitella D\u2019Agliano 512462. Intention: Bttn to proceed forward at once to seize village and deny its use to the enemy. F Coy with u\/c 2 detachment mortars, to go forward in transport as far as bridge, then to proceed on foot and occupy village. Other coys and supporting arms to move forward as soon as diversion is made. Approximate time to complete diversion \u2013 one hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1645<\/strong> CO\u2019s report to Divisional Commander \u2013 Objective taken. No opposition. Number of enemy believed north of village. Patrols night 12\/13 to gain identifications and prisoners. Two patrols, each of 1 officer and 10 ORs to 490485 and 520490.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1715<\/strong> Diversion completed. Tanks and SP guns move forward in support of bttn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2030<\/strong> CO confers with CO of 56 Recce at Tac HQ (518451) on possible exploitation or, if necessary, defence of ground gained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2100<\/strong> Bttn party returned from visit to Vatican City. During the visit, the Pope, speaking in English, addressed the 38 Brigade party of 90 officers and ORs in the audience room of his palace. The party attended mass in St Peter\u2019s Cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2130<\/strong> On his return from Vatican City, the Brigadier visited Tac HQ. Bttn O Group warned for 0530 hrs the following morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    13th <\/sup>June<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0345<\/strong> Battle report from 2 LIR. Left hand patrol met opposition in area A 5147 and sustained one man killed. The other patrol on the right, which went to the track at 525480 did not make contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0700<\/strong> 2 LIR commence attack towards Castiglione.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0815<\/strong> 2 LIR report they have reported pt 208 515472.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0900<\/strong> Recce parties 1 RIrF arrive. The battalion was relieved of its commitments by 36 Brigade and ordered to move forward to concentration area and revert to command 38 Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0910<\/strong> 2 LIR report enemy appear to be pulling out in a hurry. They are being engaged heavily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    By 1020,<\/strong> 2 LIR were on their objective. The going was slow due to the broken nature of the country and time was taken up in thoroughly searching for and mopping up the enemy. The tanks found difficulty in getting through and supported by fire, while the 6 pioneers of 2 LIR did good work firing over open sights at the retreating enemy. One SP gun was knocked out and many enemy dead were found on the objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    C Squadron KOH started moving forward along the road to Castiglione by 1100 hrs. Delayed by blown bridge at 545467. Diversion prepared and tanks able to cross by 1245 hrs. A Squadron 3 KOH move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Both squadrons advance along axis of main road to Castiglione. They reported at 1400 hrs that the enemy was withdrawing with all his guns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1445<\/strong> Intentions: 6 Innisks to follow up Squadron 56 Recce and two squadrons 3 KOH on right flank and endeavour to consolidate Castliglione before dark. 2 LIR to be prepared to move to pt 246, 519489, and later when 6 Innisks are successful to face left with right flank at Castiglione.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisk to move as soon as possible, with B Squadron 3 KOH, plus 4.2\u201d mortars and a troop M 10s in support. One battery M 10s less one troop available if required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1540<\/strong> Tanks advancing well. Practically no opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1555<\/strong> 56 Recce and tanks now in Castiglione.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1855<\/strong> 6 Innisks report that one coy is moving up and \u00bd mile short of Castiglione. Remainder of bttn now on the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    By 2010 hrs, two coys were established in Castiglione. Bttn HQ at 527505. The remaining two coys were moving into the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2045<\/strong> Tac Brigade moves forward to Castiglione at 527505.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisks to advance across on axis Castilgione\u2013Tordimonte had passed Castiglione at 0530 hrs. Task to take over from armour as it progresses. B Squadron 3 KOH, one troop M 10s, one platoon 4.2\u201d mortars and RE recce party in support of 6 Innisks. 2 LIR to follow 6 Innisks, head past Castiglione at 0700 hrs. Task to consolidate bounds behind 6 Innisks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1 RIrF were delayed in moving up from previous location and are now moving up by night. They will not go to area recced near Civitella but will go straight to a concentration area 5153 \u2013 their head passed Castiglione at 0830 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Main and Rear Brigade to move up to join Tac by 0830 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0530<\/strong> Recce party to Civitella 5247, where seven prisoners were captured, hiding in the area allotted to the bttn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0630<\/strong> Bttn\u2019s time of departure delayed owing to the amount of traffic on main route until 2100 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2200<\/strong> Bttn moved off.  C Coy moved independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisks \u2013 CASTIGLIONE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Weather bright and sunny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As it was obvious that the tactical situation was not serious, it was arranged that the bttn band should play in the village of Graffignano where D Coy were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1145<\/strong> The Band played as arranged and was much appreciated by the villagers and after the performance, the Countess (?), who lived in the castle, entertained the band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1300<\/strong> CO was called to Brigade HQ for orders and was told that the bttn was to advance on Castiglione, if possible and failing that, to get as far as possible. CO ordered A Coy to stand by before he went to Brigade HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1400<\/strong> CO called O Group conference and ordered an advance on a one coy front. A Coy to move immediately by TCV to Civitella. Other coys to follow in order, B, C, D, Bttn HQ. CO then went on a jeep with S Coy Commander and IO to the de-busing point where the S Coy Commander was left to guide bttn to assembly area whilst the CO and IO continued recce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Owing to bridge at 535469 being blown, they had to make deviation along tracks to 547466. Here, it was learned that 56 Recce had reported Castiglione had been evacuated by the enemy and the CO decided to see for himself and drove straight on there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1545<\/strong> CO and IO arrived in Castiglione and found some elements of 56 Recce in the town. CO sent back a message to the bttn that he was on the bttn objective and that they would come forward. CO then went back to meet the bttn leaving the IO to recce coy positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The civilians were very excited and pleased and established stalls in the main square with wine and cheese sandwiches to give to the troops. Coys were soon in protective positions round the town, but transport did not arrive with food etc until 2200 hrs owing to the need to wait until the REs had prepared a diversion around the blown bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    News came back that the tanks, which had gone through the town had pushed on for about four miles and had collected some prisoners and the Battle Patrol was sent out to round them up. When they reached the tanks, they found that they only been able to retain 12 of them, the others having escaped. The tanks asked the Battle Patrol to assist them in clearing the village of Tordimonte , while they were there, as they were being held up by an anti tank gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lieut Greene and the Battle Patrol led his men in and had a sharp engagement with the enemy during which one of our men was killed and one wounded but the Bosche was successfully chased from the village and the anti tank gun put out of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2130<\/strong> B Coy was ordered to a position approximately four miles forward of Castiglione in order to protect the tanks which were to harbour there for the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0400<\/strong> Reveille \u2013 bttn was to be clear of Castiglione by 0530 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0500<\/strong> Move commenced and bttn continued as far as Tordimonte, which had been cleared by tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The bttn\u2019s role was to follow up a tank advance in the direction of Orvieto but at Tordimonte, battn was ordered not to advance any further as new plans were being made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1000<\/strong> While waiting for fresh orders, the CO asks permission to clear buildings at A4856.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1030<\/strong> This was granted and A Coy sent one platoon forward to search the buildings with the other two platoons standing by to render immediate assistance if opposition was met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The buildings were, however, found to be clear of the enemy and the platoon returned to the coy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1100<\/strong> Brigadier came forward to see the CO and give him new orders, which were that the bttn was to form a bridgehead across the River Paglia at approximately A 4967.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The CO and IO went off immediately on a recce and found that the tanks had already found a suitable crossing for vehicles but as the enemy was shelling this area, the CO decided to make the initial crossing at 5147.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    While the recce was being carried out, an area was shelled causing two casualties: 1 OR killed and one wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    CO returned from recce and ordered coys to move in order D, C, A, B \u2013 C Coy to take the high ground 1000 yards north west of the crossing and D Coy to occupy the feature immediately across the river at the point of the crossing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1145<\/strong> Leading coy moved off and soon in occupation of their feature; a few Bosche were seen but did not fight. The Coy Commander, while making a recce for positions, came face to face with three enemy and immediately opened fire with his TMG, killing one and wounding another \u2013 the third ran away, but was later caught by one of the platoons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    With D Coy well established, C Coy moved quickly onto their objective \u2013 a sharp engagement was had with the enemy in the process, but did not last long and the enemy withdrew, leaving behind nine dead and 5 PoWs for the loss of two of our own men wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1200<\/strong> While C and D Coys were taking their objectives, A and B Coys were moving down from Tordimonte; the enemy had been shelling spasmodically and one \u2018stonk\u2019 of six shells fell among B Coy, killing two ORs and wounding six others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1230<\/strong> A Coy moved off to take up a position in support of C Coy and B Coy was held in reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1300<\/strong> All coys were established in their positions and Bttn HQ moved up to a farm at 498598.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0430<\/strong> Two PoWs were brought in by a scouting party and decided to search the area to our immediate front in case there were still more about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0800<\/strong> C and D Coys sent out search parties and brought in two more PoWs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2\/Lieut Foster went on a motor cycle to the village of Corbara where he expected to find one of the search parties; the party had not reached the village and he ran into a platoon of enemy and was captured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1230<\/strong> As soon as it became known, search parties were organised; one platoon from B Coy to go along the road leading north from Corbara and one platoon of A Coy to go in carriers to a point on the lateral road four miles to the north in the hope of cutting them off. The CO and IO went with the latter party and as it was in this area that the 56 Recce Regiment was operating, the CO was able to obtain some cooperation from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The search was not successful and it was learnt from civilians that the enemy had crossed the road from Corbara in a north easterly direction shortly before B Coy\u2019s platoon came along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1945<\/strong> Mobile carrier patrols operating with 9 Armoured Brigade to Brigade HQ. They had a successful operation in the Citta del Pieve sector and were highly praised by CO, 3 KOH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The patrols managed to get into the town but had to come back due to lack of tank support and increasing enemy opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0500<\/strong> B Coy who had been following up joined A Coy and consolidated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Bttn spent a quiet day, resting, swimming in the Tiber and attended to washing, sewing and other domestic duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1900<\/strong> Brigade Commander visited the bttn \u2013 socially and was asked by the CO if a dance in celebration of Waterloo Day could be held in Orvieto. The Brigadier could not answer at nice as permission had to be obtained from Divisional HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1930<\/strong> Permission was given by Brigade HQ for 5 officers and 50 ORs to visit Rome for the day on 19th June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2000<\/strong> Warning order was received from Brigade HQ that the brigade would move to area Montegabbione (4481).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lieut Foster rejoined the battalion having escaped from the enemy when they ran into a party of British troops at Montecastello 6572. He also brought back the man, who had detailed to watch him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0600<\/strong> Sixty men per bttn and 20 from Brigade HQ leave for the day in Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0915<\/strong> Brigade HQ pass SP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There are still several vehicles from all units stuck behind the diversion at 452808. There was considerable rain during the day, which made the diversion eventually impassable after so many vehicles had gone over it.  At 2330 hrs, there was very heavy downpour of rain, which made it impossible for any vehicles to pass the diversion either way. It was decided to wait until the morning to clear the diversion. One coy 6 Innisks warned to move at first light to assist the REs in mending the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    R Group, 2 LIR, at half hour notice to move from 0730 hrs and battalion at one hour notice from same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1 RIrF remain under command 56 Recce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1000<\/strong> Recce made good progress during the day and found a bridge at 9050 untouched as B Coy was sent forward to protect it and to form a bridgehead across the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1400<\/strong> D Coy given task of clearing enemy infantry from Castello to 498839 and this entailed a long approach march as tracks were impassable for trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1800<\/strong> D Coy cross river and lie up just short of Castello awaiting artillery stonk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2100<\/strong> Advance started but no contact was made and the company consolidated in area 498839 with C Coy as a firm base in Castello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2225<\/strong> One platoon sent forward to probe as far as Rasale. Still no contact so company was moved forward to the area 498839 where they remained by the Bttn HQ and S Coy were still in the area of Monte Giove<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisks \u2013 TORDIMONTE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Weather overcast \u2013 heavy rain at intervals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0600<\/strong> Advance party left to recce new in accordance with brigade instructions. Rest of bttn started to pack and clean up the area ready for the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0800<\/strong> Party left for Rome, followed by envious eyes from the rest of the bttn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1100<\/strong> Bttn em-bused and left on its long journey to Castel Di Fiori (454798). Brigade SP at junction of Routes 71 and 79 was passed at 1115 hrs. For four hours, the bttn travelled through rain and mist arriving in area 4382, where a diversion had been turned into a quagmire by the rain, and it took some eight hours for the bttn to get past it. The leading coy arrived in Castel Di Fiori at 1915 hrs. Two stray German Paratroopers remaining in the area were promptly seized. The last of the bttn arrived in the area just after midnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enemy hold Citta Della Pieve with paratroops. 1 RIrF entered Citta Della Pieve two days ago, killed 25 enemy and took 50 PoWs. Responsibility of the town was handed over to 1 East Surreys. The enemy afterwards reoccupied the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    REs had left work on diversion so Pioneer Platoon and one more coy from 6 Innisks were sent down to the diversion at 0900 hrs. Transport started moving through by 1000 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1055<\/strong> Rome leave parties return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1100<\/strong> Brigade Group to move to area Tavernelle 4881 north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1130<\/strong> Prisoners arrive. Two taken by 6 Innisks from 1 Para Regiment, five from 6 Coy 754 Regiment, two from 3 Coy 755 Field Regiment. Two officers by D Support Group from 334 Artillery Regiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Only 25 TCVs were available for the brigade. They were used by 2 LIR and then had to return to pick up 6 Innisks. Also, the route taken was along a third class road with two very bad diversions through streams. This, together with the torrential rain, made it difficult for the vehicles to get though and slow time was mde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Weather \u2013 slight rain, low cloud and mist all day; dampness made diversions difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0900<\/strong> CO returned from Rome, having been travelling since 2000 hrs on 18th June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Bttn had been found billets and so the bad weather did not cause much worry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Various working parties were sent out as follows to assist REs in making diversions passable. D Coy from road junction 437821 to 435845 and the Bttn Pioneers to 425822.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    B Coy were standing by to lend assistance but were not needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1215<\/strong> Bttn received warming order of move (not before 1600 hrs) to Tavernelle W 4881 (NIG) and recce party moved off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1500<\/strong> Party from Rome returned having been on the road since 1630 hrs on 18th June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The bttn was pleased to notice that in today\u2019s issue of the \u2018Crusader\u2019, the article on the \u2018Infantryman\u2019 written by Lt-Col Bredin, MC, was published. Two paragraphs had been omitted but this was no surprise as Lt-Col Bredin felt strongly on the merits of the infantryman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1515<\/strong> Warning Order received from Brigade HQ, times not given owing to shortage of TCVs, which had to lift 2 LIR and Brigade HQ before returning to carry 6 Innisks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2015<\/strong> CO started off to new location but found that owing to the very bad conditions of the road, traffic was blocked and not moving, so he returned to the bttn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2130<\/strong> Message was sent to Brigade HQ asking for permission to move at first light on the 20th owing to the bad state of the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Italians civilians reported 5 enemy in houses, two kilometres away and A Coy sent out two sections to investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2200<\/strong> After visit from CMP, who confirmed that the roads were impassable, CO decided that the bttn would stay in position for the night and leave at 0530 hrs on 20th June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    O Group at immediate notice to move as from 0700 hrs. To RV at road fork 482812. Bttn at 1 hrs\u2019 notice from 0700 hrs. Order of march \u2013 E, F, G, H Coys, Bttn HQ and S Coy. S Coy prepared to go forward after bttn reaches new area in following priority \u2013 Mortar Platoon, VMG Platoon, A\/Tk Platoon. B Echelon to remain in present area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1300<\/strong> Bttn warned to move at 1500 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1900<\/strong> Bttn arrives area Tavernelle. Bttn HQ established 498813.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    20th June<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0930<\/strong> Brigade Commander goes out on recce with COs, 2 LIR and 6 Innisks and Second in Command 1 RIrF. 11 CAR now in support of this brigade. Lt Col Purvis CO 11 CAR visits the Brigade Commander and goes out on recce with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1800<\/strong> Brigade Commander\u2019s O Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Following were present: CO 2 LIR, CO 6 Innisks, 2 I\/C 1 RIrF, CO 17 Field Regiment, Commander 315 A\/Tk Battery, Rep 57 Field Regiment, Rep 2 RHA, CO 11 CAR  who are in support of 38 Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    11 Brigade to inform us of the situation from time to time and give definite positions at 0300 hrs so that 2 LIR may be informed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1100<\/strong> Tac Bttn HQ moved in behind the companies in area 494880.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisks   \u2013 TAVERNELLE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Weather dry but low clouds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0530<\/strong> Bttn left for Tavernelle (4880) where it was met by Major Mathew, 2 i\/c, who with the advance party had managed to find billets for the whole bttn including A and B Echelons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0930<\/strong> CO went to Brigade HQ in order to carry out recce with the Brigadier and returned at 1130 hrs with news that the bttn would not move that night but would move forward early on 21st June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1400<\/strong> Bttn Band played in village and, as usual in Italian villages, the whole village turned out to watch and listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1800<\/strong> CO went to O Group conference at Brigade HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2000<\/strong> CO holds O Group conference attended by Supporting Arms and gave the following orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Bttn will move at 0630 on 21st June in transport to DP in area between Macchie (4387) and Panicarola (4488) and from there would advance along general lines of Route 71 giving right flank protection to 2 LIR, who were advancing west of the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisks to start their advance when 2 LIR had reached Sanfatucchio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Report lines and reference points were given to all concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Order of march: A,B,C,D Coys, each forward coy followed by its own troop of tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tanks to join infantry at Macchie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Situation to be deal with as met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Preparations were made for the move the next day after which bttn rested as much as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0930<\/strong> Bttn warned for move forward at midday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Information \u2013 Brigade Group concentrated in area Tavernelle. 28 Amphibious Jeeps under brigade control (presumably for future operations across Lake Trasimene in order to attack enemy in rear on west side of lake).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1500<\/strong> Move forward postponed. CO\u2019s O Group. Intention: Bttn, with B Squadron CTR to surge up west side of Lake Trasimene. 11 Brigade to reach line 408920 \u2013 381900 on night of 20th and allow 2 LIR to pass through at 0700 hrs on 21st June. Order of march from present area; E, F, G, H Coys, Main Bttn HQ, S Coy and Kensingtons\u2019 4.2\u201d Mortars. De-busing point \u2013 415900. Attack to commence at 0700 hrs. Order of battle \u2013 E Coy with 1 to tanks (forward recce), R Group, Pioneers (for bridging and clearing mines), 3\u201d and 4\u201d Mortars, S Coy Commander\u2019s Recce party, remainder of tanks, F, G and H Coys (H Coy to mop up any bypassed enemy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Flank Support \u2013 6 Innisks following on right rear to take Castiglione, if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Artillery Support \u2013 Divisional artillery, 1 Battery Mediums, 2 troops of M 10s. Latter cooperating with tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Final Intention \u2013 to reach crossroads and bridge 365040 (Codeword \u2013 Longbow).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1900<\/strong> Information: 11 Brigade failed to reach their objective. DP thereupon changed to La Chiusa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    21st June<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Situation. 2 LF did not take the village of Sanfatucchio 4089 and were subjected to fairly heavy mortaring and shelling during the night. 1 Surreys on the left managed to get a copy up to Casa Kagone 412886 and put patrols to 389875, which made no contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    5 Northamptons on the right did not change their positions, which were roughly along the line of the 89 Northing between Sanfatucchio and the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The enemy resistance has been stiffening considerably during the past few days. The parachutists (1\/3 Para) put a hard fight in Citta Della Pieve 3785 south and along the whole of the divisional front, there has been a much greater concentration of enemy forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Captured maps indicated that the enemy intended to hold a line Gioella 3491 \u2013 Frattavecchia 3692 \u2013 La Bandita 4092, but obviously his defensive positions were dictated by the ground, which offered a better MLR on the ridge that runs north and south of Sanfatucchio, held by elements of 344 Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The situation with 11 Brigade was such that it was now necessary for 2 LIR to attach this ridge and capture the village. All this information was passed to 2 LIR at 0315 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0400<\/strong> 2 LIR pass SP to concentration area in Macchie 4387. CO goes onto HQ 2 LF to receive latest information and perfect his plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0500<\/strong> 11 CAR pass SP to concentration area Macchie and Panicarola (4488).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0630<\/strong> Brigade HQ move forward to Panicale. HQ established at 453839.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0700<\/strong> 6 Innisks pass SP and move forward to concentration area Panicale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1 RIrF to move independently and concentrate around Panicarola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0800<\/strong> Zero hour for attack by 2 LIR on Sanfatucchio. There was considerable resistance from this village, which was the enemy main defence line and, as was afterwards found out, he had been ordered to hold for three days at all costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The attack by 2 LIR supported by B Squadron CAR was completely successful. Heavy fighting took place with fierce exchanges of small arms fire. Most of the opposition came from the west edge of the town. 36 PoWs were taken in all, coming from I Bttn 755 IR, I and II Bttns 754 IR..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2 LIR consolidated their positions after clearing up the western edge of the village and the cemetery at San Felice 405895.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Troop of M 10s (released by 11 Brigade) now going to B Squadron 11 CAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A counter attack by about a company came in on the left of the London Irish at about 1625 hrs. The fighting took place mainly in the cemetery area and was successfully repulsed by E Coy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The bridge at 408920 was captured intact and steps taken by 17 Field Regiment to ensure that it would not be destroyed by the enemy DF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1900<\/strong> 2 LIR coys positions at 404896\u2013407900\u2013410897\u2013411897. HQ at 413893.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisks moved up during the early evening to establish the situation on the right of the London Irish. Their objective was Pucciarelli 415906, which they were nearing at 1900 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    MG Platoon from D Support Group to go to 6 Innisks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Two troops, 6 pounders from 254 A\/Tk Battery to go to 6 Innisks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    RE to recce routes north west and south west to Panicarola 4488 to ensure free passage for carriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisks established having met a fair amount of opposition from Pucciarelli HQ at 428896. Coys at 424904 \u2013 417908 \u2013 411904 and 412902.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Both battalions to hold their present position during the night and to consolidate firmly and prepare for strong enemy counter attacks. A\/Tk guns and MMGs all reported in position by 2300 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Battle at Lake Trasimene.<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1030<\/strong> Main Bttn B Coy, S Coy and B Echelon moved forward to general area of 475880.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1600<\/strong> B Coy now at 448888 as flank protection for 6 Innisks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisks \u2013 MACCHIE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Weather fine, but cloudy \u2013 sunny later in the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    CO, IO and OC, S Coy went forward to recce de-busing area and also to learn form from 2 LIR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0700<\/strong> Found that progress past Macchie (4386) was not possible and coys had to de-bus and concentrate in area 435865 and wait until 2 LIR attacked Sanfatucchio (4189).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This attack was fought hard as the Bosche was more stubborn than he had been of late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1130<\/strong> News received that 2 LIR had entered their village but fighting was still going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1130<\/strong> CO and IO went to CO, 2 LIR in order to tie up the next stage in the advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    CO went across country to Sanfatucchio from crossroads 416893 and IO went to village in Jeep; both were subjected to accurate shell and mortar fire. Plans were laid by both COs and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1230<\/strong> Lt Col Kerr returned to the bttn and held an O Group conference at which he told his plan i.e. Bttn would attack Pucciarelli (4190) on a two coy front. A and B leading; C behind A; D behind B with tanks in support (A Squadron, 11 Armoured Brigade).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A and B would take objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1st : Pucciarelli \u2013 Right to pt 264 and left to track junction 411902.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2nd: Line of river from 407912 \u2013 417902 and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    3rd: Line of river 400917 \u2013 413923 after which C and D Coys would go onto Castliglione 4194.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    MMGs and Mortars would report on the bttn start line on capture of first objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1330<\/strong> IO and one platoon A Coy went to recce assembly area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Remainder of bttn followed on foot and were shown to positions at A Coy \u2013 428898, B Coy \u2013 429899, C Coy \u2013 429897, D Coy \u2013 431899.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tanks were assembled on track 425896; CO was in tank. Tac HQ in carrier and jeep behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Zero hour was at first to be 1500 hrs but 2 LIR on left were counter attacked and all artillery assistance was given to them until it was beaten off and so zero hour was not until 1645 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1645<\/strong> A and B Coys crossed start line (stream at 433900) and at the same time, a heavy concentration of enemy shelling fell in bttn area, but little damage was done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Artillery put down concentration on first objective Z\u201310 to Z+5 (two regiments).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Enemy continued shelling but most of it fell in rear of bttn area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1710<\/strong> Village covered with great clouds of smoke as tanks shot into the houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1718<\/strong> B Coy held up by M\/G fire and tanks moved forward to deal with the trouble, which was coming from Red House on their right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1730-1736<\/strong> A Coy still advancing, but without tanks on their left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1740<\/strong> Enemy MGs giving trouble from farms and tanks moved forward to deal with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    B Coy out of contact with their tanks and D Coy ordered to send theirs and B Coy told they must push on with this help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1745<\/strong> A Coy, almost on objective, called for Artillery Fire on crossroads 416907 \u2013 fire came down five minutes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Spasmodic mortaring and shelling of bttn area but more trouble come from MGs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tanks were not very cooperative, leaving their coys, sometimes for thirty minutes. This caused delay in some cases when coys needed a MG post dealt with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1748<\/strong> A Coy held up by heavy M\/G fire and Artillery fired on target in spite of closeness of troops, who were only 300 yards away. The shoot was successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1818<\/strong> D Coy were using B Coy\u2019s tanks to assist them on to the objective at 418906, then tanks returned to B Coy, who put up two Green flares to show the tanks where to go to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1825<\/strong> A Coy on objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1830<\/strong> B Coy called on tanks to deal with M\/G post by Railway Bridge 416905.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1838<\/strong> Major Irwin OC A Coy wounded and had to be evacuated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    C Coy moved round to left of A Coy to protect the flank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1915<\/strong> News came that 2 LIR, on our left, were unlikely to get any further tonight and CO decided that he too would consolidate village of Pucciarelli tonight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1950<\/strong> CO asked for more A\/Tk guns from Brigade Support Group as only three of our own were effective and was promised two troops 254 A\/Tk Battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2000<\/strong> All coys on objective and plans were made for consolidation as quickly as possible in order to get it finished before dark. IO collected all reps of supporting arms and guided them up to the village where they were to meet the CO, who had gone on in his tank to see some of the coy positions. He expected to find C Coy at 414904 and went there first followed by three other tanks. On arrival at these crossroads, he found that the Bosche still occupied the houses there; the first knowledge of this being when a German fired a Schmeiser at him in the turret of the tank and cut the strap of his headphones in two. The track at this point was too narrow to enable the tank to manoeuvre and the turret could not be turned as the gun fired on one of the houses so the CO ordered the tanks behind him to reverse so that the gun could be brought into use. The rear tank (the first one to reverse) blew a track on a Tellermine after moving 50 yards effectively blocking the track, as there were high banks on each side. This meant the other tanks going forward over this difficult track \u2013 which was managed eventually by constant manoeuvre, a wary eye being kept on the Bosche at the same time. Eventually they got out and returned to Bttn HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    During this time, the Supporting arms\u2019 representatives had been waiting for the CO in the village and as light was failing, a guide was sent to where support weapons were to RV and brought them up while the reps made their own recce for positions \u2013 which could be adjusted later if the CO desired: A Coy 414905, B 417905, 413905, D Coy 426903 and Bttn HQ 427896.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Spasmodic shelling and mortaring of coy positions took place during the night; also harassing fire from MGs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2300<\/strong> An enemy patrol tried to enter the village but was chased out,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2340<\/strong> A jeep containing a driver, two signallers and a No 19 Set drove past our forward positions and carried on for a mile before being halted by German sentries. The driver immediately went into reverse and went back down the road followed by bursts from Schmeisser machine posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The driver ziz-zagged across the road to avoid these bursts and the machine went off the road and overturned down a six foot drop, the driver and one signaller managed to get away; the other is missing, believed captured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Enemy casualties \u2013 60 killed, 12 PoWs. Many wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Our own casualties were: Killed \u2013 Lieut CJ Horgan, 2 Lieut RRB Roche and seven ORs. Wounded \u2013 Major RJT Irwin MC, Lieut JM Campbell, 2\/Lieut IF Tilly and 15 ORs. Missing \u2013 4 ORs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1410<\/strong> 6 Innisks and tank support moving up road 4288 and forking right behind Main Bttn HQ along track 424888-429889.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Bttn casualties since 0800 hrs \u2013 1 killed, 2 officers, and approximately 15 ORs wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Situation. 2 LIR were counter attacked twice during the night by parties of about 30 enemy in areas 408902 and 411903. All were repulsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisks were counter attacked at dawn by about a coy of the enemy on the outskirts of Pucciarelli, which was successfully dealt with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At 0730<\/strong>, a coy of 6 Innisks at 424904 moved forward to 424908. SPs at 407907 seen going into the woods were heavily engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At 0900 hrs,<\/strong> 2 LIR sent one platoon supported by tanks to area 411903 to close the gap between 6 Innisks and themselves and also to shift some enemy who were still occupying two large houses in that area. This was also essential because these two houses, occupied by the enemy, were on top of the ridge, also occupied by the London Irish and gave them a certain amount of observation. Once these two objectives were taken, the enemy would have no observation except from the village of Castiglione Del Lago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A two platoon attack from G Coy, 2 LIR, supported by tanks went in at 0900 hrs and by 1030 hrs, the situation was cleared up. Considerable opposition was met from MG fire. Locations of 2 LIR are as follows after slight readjustments. Coys at 404896 \u2013 407898 \u2013 410898 \u2013 411893.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At 1050,<\/strong> a counter attack, seen forming up in front of 2 LIR, was dispersed by heavy artillery fire. After this, a junction point was made between 2 LIR and 6 Innisks at 411903 and 6 Innisks sent one coy to this area to ensure the gap well closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1710<\/strong> F Coy, 2 LIR, went forward from its positions to feel forward and find out something more concrete about the enemy. They advanced about 200 yards meeting stiff opposition and from then on remained in close contact \u2013 about 150 yards away from the enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They were counterattacked by the enemy soon after getting into position but managed to hold the onslaught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisks \u2013 PUCCIARELLI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Weather, bright and clear; enemy continued mortar and artillery fire spasmodically throughout the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0530<\/strong> Secret message received for 7% officers and ORs to be ready for an advance party to leave Tavernelle area early on 25th June for Narni in divisional transport. Nominal rolls were prepared and letters of instruction were sent to officers of C Coy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0600<\/strong> Enemy counterattack developed on the village consisting of approximately 40 infantry and 1 heavy SP gun supported by artillery and mortars. The SP gun shot into the house doing considerable damage. The house, containing two MMGs, was severely damaged and set on fire, burying the guns (one was later recovered). A portee and 2 A\/Tk guns and a 3\u201d mortar of our own were destroyed; and also one portee of 254 A\/Tk Battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Close fighting ensued but the enemy did not manage to penetrate beyond the edge of the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0845<\/strong> 2 LIR and C Coy extended towards one another in order to close the gap between the two bttns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0900<\/strong> C Coy reported that the enemy had been beaten off leaving behind a large number of casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0930<\/strong> The SP gun was seen moving north west at 407907 and received the attention of the artillery \u2013 shots were failing on the target area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The tanks with C Coy went back to refuel and get more ammunition, afterwards resuming the positions they had in the village before the counter attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The enemy continued to shell our positions heavily throughout the day but no further attacks were forthcoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Coy Commanders were informed that the present policy was to hold on to present positions until the morning of 24th June, when we could continue in a further attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Patrols were sent out at night, which found that the enemy was occupying positions at 412912 and pts 276, 408909. Voices and movement were heard but the enemy was not seen. Standing patrols at 420907 and 425911 but not see or hear a thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The night was quiet on the whole. Patrols from 2 LIR found the enemy digging in hard and several places were confirmed to be occupied. The 6 Innisks on the left were shelled slightly during the early morning and patrols heard enemy in the houses around 409 909 and generally sounds of the enemy digging in hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A 6 Innisks recce patrol to the lake at 432909 during the morning found nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The forward battalions had a quiet day on the whole. There was a spasmodic mortaring and shelling of the whole area and F Coy, 2 LIR, were counter attacked again during the afternoon. Our own 3\u201d and 4.2\u201d mortars kept up a steady harassing fire on the enemy positions and caused considerable damage, a statement confirmed afterwards by prisoners captured when the 1 RIrF attacked. Intentions tomorrow for the 1 RIrF supported by 11 CAR and one coy, 6 Innisks, to attack Pescia 4091 and Ranciano 3991.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    11 Brigade to support and protect flanks, 5 Northamptons on right by the lake, and 1 Surreys on left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1000<\/strong> Warning order from brigade for a bttn attack on the 24th June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6 Innisks \u2013 PUCCIARELLI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Fine weather, light cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0830<\/strong> Message received cutting down bttn advance party of 35 all ranks. An attack was planned against the Trasimeno Line in which this bttn was participating and CO and IO with OC D Coy went to an OP at 474892 from where they could observe the whole of the lake, thus giving a very good view of the ground the bttn would be going over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1100<\/strong> CO RIrF visited the bttn to tie up details with CO, 6 Innisks, of tomorrow\u2019s attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1215<\/strong> Bttn area was heavily shelled and mortared \u2013 D Coy\u2019s HQ being the chief sufferers \u2013 one officer and 5 ORs of Innisks were wounded and 8 ORs from supporting weapons. Because of this, the CO changed the task of D Coy as leading company and substituted A Coy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2000<\/strong> CO called an O Group conference and gave the following orders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Enemy \u2013 known to have five bttns on Trasimeno Line with strong defences in the bed of Rio Pescia 4091. Positions were also known at pt 266 420911.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Own Troops \u2013 RIrF were attacking towards Rio Pescia with A Coy. We were to provide right flank protection on a one coy front. 5 Northants would be attacking on our right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Intentions \u2013 38 Brigade and 5 Northants to make a limited advance to a line approximately 500 yards south of Rio Pescia. 6 Innisks covering right flank of 1 RIrF during advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Method \u2013 At Z+15, tanks and infantry would leave the assembly area and start moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A Coy to take as first objective pt 276 (408909), then to push on to pt 267 (409914).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Brigade HQ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Patrols during the night from the forward coy, 2 LIR found that the enemy had pulled back about 300 yards. When a platoon was sent forward to occupy houses, recently evacuated, they found it unoccupied by about 20 Germans. Direct hit on Brigade HQ during the night. 2 ORs wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0445<\/strong> 1 RIrF concentration completed. Two coys, 6 Innisks relieved by 5 Northamptons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0530<\/strong> Attack by 1 RIrF on objectives \u2013 Pescia and Ranciano \u2013 commences. Attack preceded by artillery barrage on the opening line lasting for 24 minutes and then lifting at 10 minutes intervals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0920<\/strong> First objective reached. Pescia was cleared by the attacking coy and supported by reserve coy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Coy, 6 Innisks reached their objective pt 267, 409915. Opposition was strong during the first phase of this attack, mainly from MG and mortar fire. Bttn HQ 1 RIrF was shot up by AP from 88mm gun causing a few casualties. After Pescia and pt 267 had been consolidated, one coy 5 Buffs moved up to Pescia and the remainder of the battalion moving up behind. 5 Buffs were supported by the Wiltshire Yeomanry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1610<\/strong> 1 RIrF cleared Ranciano and situation cleared up. One coy firmly established in the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This battalion fought extremely well during the day, meeting considerable opposition and inflicting heavy casualties. They were supported by 11 CAR, who as usual put up a magnificent performance. There were very few casualties in the battalion \u2013 a total of 40 altogether and no officers killed. A total of 85 PoWs were taken during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Plan for consolidation. 1 RIrF to hold Pescia and Ranciano and road junction 397909. 2 LIR to remain in present location, but push one coy forward to 400905.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    17 pounder troop 254 A\/Tk Battery to be in support of 1 RIrF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    5 Buffs pushed forward during the evening in the line of the River Pescia where considerable difficulty was found in crossings for the tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The enemy was still fighting hard and putting up a fierce resistance. We had broken his main line, which he had ordered to hold at all costs and was now attempting to stop the rout from setting in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Considerable damage was inflicted on the enemy by the brigade since the London Irish attacked on 21st<\/sup> June. The London Irish counted a 100 dead along in and around the village of Sanfatucchio and they took 85 PoWs as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is a good example of the damage inflicted by our intense mortaring and shelling and the A\/Tk gun platoons figured considerably in demoralising the enemy. They did good work in giving close support fire on to houses and buildings to neutralise enemy MGs and snipers\u2019 positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0530<\/strong> B and C Coys were on the Start Line and the Barrage started on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Companies moved forward according to the plan with the tanks searching all houses with their 7.5 guns and machine gunning possible FDLs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0845<\/strong> B Coy had considerable trouble from their left flank and called for assistance from the guns who put down a 10 minute stonk and B moved forward again and continued until they were pinned down by LMG fire. The tanks had difficulty in locating the bother but as they moved forward the fire ceased and the company moved forward into Ranciano, which was the final objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    C Company moved forward without a great deal of opposition until they reached the outskirts of Pescia, which was the final objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0850<\/strong> Major Neville Chance was wounded in the left arm by a mortar bomb but carried on until the final objective was reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0745<\/strong> A Coy continued to advance well and the RIrF on their left were also doing well but had not reached as far as A Coy, as they were being held up by MGs, which needed artillery attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The 5 Northants on the right had only been able to advance 300 yards in the face of still opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0835<\/strong> Enemy artillery concentration continued at intervals on the bttn area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0845<\/strong> 5 Northants on right were still only at 417914 but making steady progress. This necessitated keeping watch on the right flank and this was done by C Coy, who had followed A Coy and was now established on pt 276 (409909), while A Coy were still fighting their way forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    5 Northants estimated that there were 2 coys of enemy between them and the main road (Route 71).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0900<\/strong> News that the RIrF on the left were still doing well and that prisoners had started to come in, 25 being taken so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0935<\/strong> A Coy reached their objective, pt 276 (408915) and the 5 Northants on the right were making better progress, having broken through the enemy\u2019s FDLs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1005<\/strong> Brigade informed the bttn that Wiltshire Yeomanry was on Route 71 behind us and had been ordered forward to Pescia ((403912). The RIrF on our left had reached Pescia and from enemy wireless intercepts came the information that the wireless at Ranciano was closing down, possibly indicating withdrawal and a watch was kept for targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1135<\/strong> 5 Northants on right again held up and their tanks needed refuelling; this was done and their advance continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1210<\/strong> Information came through that the enemy counterattack was coming in from the west \u2013 artillery was informed and it was broken up. 36 Brigade was to pass through 38 Brigade within 2 hours of 38 Brigade reaching its objectives and guides were sent to cross roads 416894 to direct oncoming units to the right tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1230<\/strong> 5 Buffs passed through 2 LIR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1400<\/strong> Forward coys were still under constant MG and artillery fire as 36 Brigade had not yet gone forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A Panzer Mark V had knocked out 3 of A Coy\u2019s tanks and the tanks had to withdraw behind the hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1700<\/strong> 36 Brigade went forward and the situation for us was eased although harassing fire from enemy artillery continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1800<\/strong> The bttn dispositions were now as follows: Bttn HQ \u2013 427896, A Coy \u2013 pt 276 (408915), B Coy in village at 415905, C Coy on pt 267 (408910), D Coy \u2013 413913. Food and supplies were sent forward; A Company\u2019s food to remain with C Coy until called forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1930<\/strong> A heavy thunderstorm began and, before very long, all the diggings had filled with water. This stopped the advance of 36 Brigade, who had just formed a bridgehead over the Rio Pescia and the bttn was not able to concentrate prior to going out of the line as was originally intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A Coy forced the strong point of a house in their area as the rain made the outside positions untenable. A rum issue was authorised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2030<\/strong> While support weapons were going into position, an A\/Tk gun officer was machine gunned from a position east of the main road and 1000 yards behind the 5 Northants\u2019 FDLs. The officer was not hit and the machine gun post was disposed of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    During the day, we took 14 prisoners; our casualties were one officer and ten ORs wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Move two coys \u2013 one to La Villa 392902 and the other to Belvedere 385899. Both coys supported by B Squadron 11 CAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A\/Tk \u2013 Platoon of 17 pounders remain with 1 RIrF, troop of 6 pounders each to 2 LIR and 6 Innisks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The night was generally quiet with odd mortaring and shelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The situation at La Villa and Belvedere was so obscure that the coys from 2 LIR did not occupy them,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The brigade remained in its present position all day. Very slight mortaring and shelling during the day. During the afternoon, a few 105 mm gun shells landed on the main road between Macchie 4387 and in the gun areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lt Col Dunnill, CO 1 RIrF, was reported to be missing at about 1000 hrs. He left this morning in a tank to visit the forward coys and no news has been heard of him since. Suspicions were assured by the fact that nothing had been heard over him over the air. Small recce patrols went out to try and locate him, but all reported NTR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    0900<\/strong> The CO, the acting IO (Lieut R Gamble) and Major Anderson artillery rep left Tac in the command tank to visit the companies and have not been head of since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1100<\/strong> The Adjutant took over command of the bttn and dispatched a carrier patrol to search the area for the tank. Nothing was seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1400<\/strong> Patrol sent across country in the direction of the next village Badia but no trace was found of the party and the patrol returned after being fired on from the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1600<\/strong> IO resumes his role after being in bed for two days. Major N Chance is evacuated as wound has turned septic. Captain Coetzee 2.i.c. takes over command of the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Spasmodic shelling of the bttn area was the only activity during the day and the bttn was able to enjoy the lull \u2013 making full use of the time available for resting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1300<\/strong> 2 LIR ordered to send two coys to San Biagio 3891 and Badia 3890. 6 Innisks ordered to concentrate coys around Bttn HQ in area 428898. This order was subsequently cancelled and 6 Innisks ordered to concentration area 4587.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1500<\/strong> Two coys, 2 LIR commenced occupation of these two villages. No opposition met, but a certain number of mines. One coy established in San Biagio and one coy in Badia by 1900 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2 LIR to hold this ridge until relieved by 2 LF tonight. Coys can then withdraw back to concentration area 4786 south of Panicale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2015<\/strong> 2 LIR told to withdraw whole bttn less the coy at 390902. This was afterwards not required by 11 Brigade and so, after relief by 2 LF on Badia\u2013San Biagio ridge, whole battalion withdrew to concentration area 4786.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1500<\/strong> A Echelon moved from Macchie to the area of Bttn HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Slight shelling of 1 RIrF during the night, causing a few casualties. 1 RIrF ordered to move out tonight and concentrate in the area of the castle at 475882. This was completed without incident during the morning and the whole bttn was established by 1300 hrs in the new area. Except for one mortar platoon D Support Group under command 56 Recce, whole Brigade Group now concentrated out of the line. It was also fairly conclusive, according to PoWs and civilians, that Lt Col Dunnill, Commander of 1 RIrF, his Battery Commander and IO, were all taken prisoner in a tank in the Badia area. No CO has yet been appointed to take his place and the Adjutant has taken over temporary command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
