0200 <\/strong>Relief of III\/4 RTT completed by 1 RIrF. Heavy mortaring in the Caira area, during the night and continued at intervals during the day. Slight mortaring and shelling of forward areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1200<\/strong> Ten shells landed near bridge 860233. No damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2015<\/strong> Local recce patrol from left coy 6 Innisks found American MG belts hung in trees to mark path to gap of wire. The belts and gap were rearranged. About the same time, a patrol from 2 LIR met enemy 20 strong in front of left coy. A grenade duel ensued and the enemy withdrew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2300<\/strong> Reserve coy 6 Innisks moves into forward area and takes up position 833225.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 Innisks \u2013 MONTE CASTELLONE (G835230).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0200 <\/strong>A few enemy tried to infiltrate B Coy (left coy) positions but only one succeeded in getting close and threw grenades and was then scared off by TMG fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0500<\/strong> CO visited forward companies \u2013 going forward to right forward coy where movement by day was not practicable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1540<\/strong> Enemy movement was observed near the summit of pt 593 (G836217).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1855 \u2013 1930<\/strong> Further activity was observed from the same area in the form of verey light parachute flares and also odd bursts of Schmeisser fire was heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2015<\/strong> It was discovered that the enemy had been using discarded American M\/G belts to mark a path leading to a gap in the wire defences in front of the left forward coy. These belts were removed and the wire rearranged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2100<\/strong> The troop of tanks in the valley (G837228) was taken over by crews from 12 RCTR (3 Rivers) and the original crews returned to their own unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2130<\/strong> The bttn pioneers completed the laying of an A\/Tk minefield at G836227.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2210<\/strong> The 3\u201d Mortars Bombs fired by our own mortars fell short in front of A Coy position \u2013 no casualties were caused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D Coy arrived in the bttn area under Captain Griffiths from their reserve position at B Echelon \u2013 and were shown to their allotted area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sitrep \u2013 Night 31 March\/1 April. Night\u2019s issues of rations, water and certain stores effected successfully and lift of previous night\u2019s jettisoned stores by 20 additional mules got under way. Will continue additional process nightly to maximum pressure but doubtful of this will prove adequate to get reserves of all classes in position by end of night 2\/3 April. Patrols Hugh and Joe NTR. At approx 2215hrs, Patrol Timothy made contact with enemy patrol 30 strong and succeeded in passing information back to Coy HQ. Enemy then engaged with 3\u201d mortars and dispersed. Whole of that coy front then covered by additional patrols and rest of night NTR. Visibility very foggy. Enemy shelling at 2300hrs (2 shells), 2350 (2 shells), 0200 (2 shells) and 0505-0530 (30 shells). No casualties in forward area . One OR wounded area 1 RIrF HQ. At 0520, enemy shelling area rear platoon right forward coy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0605<\/strong> Shell rep from F Coy \u2013 15 HE in coy area from enemy 5 cm mortars. Bearing 265 degrees magnetic. From 0510-0520hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0610<\/strong> Three enemy shells in valley below Bttn HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Left \u2013 recce patrols, 1 NCO and 3 to area 826235. Mathew 1915 \u2013 2300. Mark to repeat at 2315-0300. Luke to repeat at 0315 \u2013 0445. Task \u2013 to give warning of any enemy attempt to interpose between ourselves and 6 Innisks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special light signal \u2013 for tonight, one green verey will bring special 3\u201d mortar DFs. All informed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0810<\/strong> Sgt Jones of Mortar Platoon reports that his detachment in gully leading up to E Coy saw party of 8 men crossing the skyline above their positions at 0245hrs. E Company commander was informed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0815<\/strong> No rations to 8 men of Mortar Platoon in E Coy\u2019s area. F Coy supplying today. E contacted and asked to rectify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1200<\/strong> Increased artillery activity. Hundred shells in Caira up to 1700hrs. One hundred and fifty shells in Brigade HQ area from 0445 \u2013 1730 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2100<\/strong> Divisional Commander visits Brigade Commander at Brigade HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrols during night met no enemy. Slight mortaring of forward positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the night, coy positions were changed and slightly modified \u2013 all changes being completed by 0420hrs. The positions were now C Coy right forward, B Coy centre, A Coy left forward, D Coy in reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0010<\/strong> B Coy patrol returned \u2013 no contact being made with the enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0300<\/strong> All watches were advanced by one hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0710<\/strong> Bttn OP reported two enemy moving in the vicinity of Phantom House (G829226).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1945<\/strong> Enemy mortared our own 3\u201d Mortar positions but caused no casualties or damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2320-2340<\/strong> C and D Coys\u2019 local patrols returned without having seen or heard any sign of the enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0030<\/strong> Patrol Abel out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0315<\/strong> Patrols Harry and Luke out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0700<\/strong> Sitrep: 1030hrs \u2013 Patrol Tom fired on from area 828246 when approaching objective 828245. Left forward coy called for requisition DF 22 at 2202 hrs. Brought down at 2210 hrs. Patrol Cain reports enemy patrol 20 strong forward of Pt 724.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exchange of grenades. Enemy then made off toward right forward company. Right forward company warned but further NTR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0425<\/strong> Patrol Dick saw light in valley immediately in front of patrol base. Answered by light on hill on enemy side. Bearing on enemy MG 42 of 310\u00b0<\/strong> and mortar of 40\u00b0<\/strong> reported. Engaged by Tac support and own 3\u201d mortars. On engaging, MG 42 flares went up from that area. Answered with 20 bombs from Tac Support. 0530 \u2013 Patrol Harry reported in and confirmed foregoing. 0545 \u2013 Patrol Abel in NTR. Usual nightly maintenance carried out. 0635 \u2013 sound bearing on gun firing on Caira approx 356\u00b0<\/strong> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0825<\/strong> Intentions night 2\/3 April: Carry out internal relief of right forward and reserve coys. Start laying AP minefield in saddle area 830239. Patrol Tummy \u2013 Battle Patrol to area 828245. Task \u2013 to cover relief of right forward company. \u2013 2015 \u2013 0400 hrs. Patrol Webb \u2013 1 Officer and 10 ORs. Task \u2013 to lie up in area 829232 to cover mine laying 2015 -0400 hrs. Recce patrols \u2013 Tea (2030-2330), Mile (2330 \u2013 0230), Sugar (0230 \u2013 0500). Strength \u2013 1 Officer and 3 ORs. Task \u2013 to area 829238 to give warning of enemy approach. One Green verey light for supporting 3\u201d mortar DF for all patrols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1400<\/strong> Enemy air bursts (ranging shells) over road 863238 and hill Fucciata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1405-1415<\/strong> Three or four enemy guns, firing singly at 30 second intervals, shelling areas (1) 841245 \u2013 sound bearing 320\u00b0. (2) Road 851236 \u2013 7, sound bearing 290\u00b0. (3) Hill 8523 \u2013 sound bearing 240\u00b0. Bearings taken from Bttn HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1420<\/strong>\u20131700<\/strong> Enemy guns change target areas. ADS from 320\u00b0 \u2013 north slopes of hill 851237 and 847243 \u2013 road 862236 \u2013 Ken\u2019s mortars in valley 840238.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shelling continues \u2013 from sound bearing 240\u00b0 magnetic (probably 2 guns) \u2013 on track 863235, 863233 in valley below Bttn HQ and ADS. Air burst over road 862236. From sound bearing 290\u00b0 on hill 2523 and ADS. From sound bearings 320\u00b0 and 330\u00b0 on track 859234. Artillery inf. All battalions from Bttn HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1700<\/strong> Sitrep: 0755 \u2013 3 shells in F Coy area. No casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1400-1700<\/strong> \u2013 enemy shelling and mortaring areas Caira, ADS and B Support HQ. Mortaring 841244. Hit between main buildings and outhouses of ADS. Sound bearing of 285\u00b0 from 837241. Otherwise NTR from 0700 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1745\u20131815<\/strong> Enemy shelling area of road 844243\u20134, 844240, area of B Support Group and valley below Btttn HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3rd April<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Brigade HQ \u2013 CAIRA (G 825246).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day generally quiet. Mortaring and shelling of forward positions during day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caira and areas G 841245 and G 837252 received most attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrols during night made no contact with enemy but 2 LIR patrol found a dead German at G 827232 from 1 Coy 211 CR. The presence of this regiment is discounted on the brigade front, though the corpse had only been dead a couple of days, believed to have killed in the patrol clash on Monte Castellone two days ago. Enemy movement was seen at G 836215 and engaged by own mortars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 Innisks \u2013 MONTE CASTELLONE (G835230).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0100 <\/strong>Bttn MGs were changed over \u2013 two guns from reserve positions changing with the two in right front coy area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0130<\/strong> D Coy patrol returned \u2013 no contact being made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0415<\/strong> 3\u201d Mortars began harassing fire task \u2013 which was firing at intervals for 25 minutes on the saddle at G828228 and Phantom House G829226.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0550<\/strong> Patrol to Saddle at 828228 returned and reported finding an enemy standing patrol on Saddle 827228 \u2013 3\u201d mortar fire was brought down on this area as a result of this information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0600<\/strong> D Coy patrol returned without contacting the enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spasmodic mortaring of forward positions occurred during the day but not damage or casualties were caused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OP reported a suspected enemy mortar position at G822228.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1945<\/strong> Six enemy were observed on pt593 (G836215) and our left flanking bttn (5 Northamptons), in whose area it was, were informed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2030<\/strong> Enemy mortar bombs fell in bttn area and, in retaliation, our MGs fired on Phantom Ridge where an enemy OP was suspected to be. 4.2\u201d mortars also fired on the same area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2115<\/strong> The A\/Tk minefield at 836227 was extended to cover a possible gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2145<\/strong> Enemy shelled the bttn area and Shellrep was rendered to 17 Field Regiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2230<\/strong> C Coy patrol to G828227 returned without having encountered the enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2250\u20132330<\/strong> Enemy mortared area G837228.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the day, the second in command Major Maxwell made arrangements for some of the food for forward coys to be cooked in A Echelon and sent forward in suitable containers, in order to overcome the difficulty of cooking in the forward areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day generally quiet. Spasmodic mortaring and shelling of brigade area during day. Brigade HQ slightly shelled. No casualties. Standing patrol out in front of pt706 came in at last light reporting enemy use of tracks in front of 6 Innisks positions, two mortar positions and stated he heard a tracked vehicle going along the tracks in front of 6 Innisks\u2019 forward positions. Recce patrols during night to give warning of enemy approach go out at first light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 RIrF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0300<\/strong> Enemy MG fire in front of B Coy.  Continued intermittently. No evident reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There have been coming up each night on a jeep and mule \u2026.bringing supplies and ammunition to the forward companies. So far, no difficulty had been experienced and practically no casualties. A forward Administration Post has been established at San Michele (G 9023) from which all supplies are brought forward either on jeeps or mules. The enemy was active during the night. The 6 Innisks had an engagement with the enemy at house 828226. Mortar fire was brought down and the enemy withdrew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grenades were thrown by D Coy 6 Innisks on enemy approaching the wire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hostile mortaring of right coy was heavy during the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forward of Mt Castellone (8324) digging and shouting was heard. The shouting was believed to come from a mortar position, which was shelled and mortared. In front of the left forward coy of 1 RIrF, the enemy attempted to draw fire. He did not succeed in this respect but caused DF to be brought down, which scattered him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the whole, a quiet night. A patrol from 6 Innisks met an enemy patrol at 828228 and grenades were thrown. Enemy dispersed. No casualties. Enemy movement was heard at various points on brigade front and mortared accordingly. Two German bodies and 7 French bodies found at 825234 but no identification. Harassing fire was on a reduced scale, but seemed heavier than of late, especially on the Castellone feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1000<\/strong> 6 Innisks reported enemy SP gun moved into position and camouflaged at 820225.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was mortared heavily and seen to blow up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slight harassing fire during day. No casualties. 2 LIR build fresh mule track leading up slopes of Mt Castellone to assist mule transport. Slope is extremely steep and mules fall over unless on a reasonable path. Difficulty has been experienced by all battalions with the muleteers pulling the ropes and dumping their loads and this has necessitated undue supervision and considerable escort to the mule train each night. This practice of dumping stores almost becomes fantastic if there is any shelling in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0645<\/strong> Owing to a mist reducing visibility the bttn had to \u2018stand to\u2019 longer than usual, the mist clearing away about one hour after daybreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0940<\/strong> D Coy observed an enemy SP gun firing on pt 593 from Phantom Ridge. Our mortars were brought into action and 39 hits were observed out of the 70 bombs they fired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two PoWs were captured by a standing patrol from 6 Innisks during the night at 834224. They belonged to 3 Coy 115 Recce. Also, during the night, enemy patrols bumped the forward positions of 6 Innisks and were driven off with grenades. There was heavy mortaring of 6 Innisks area during the night. Two men were killed. Otherwise, only intermittent fire on rest of brigade front. As usual, the day was quiet and slight harassing fire mainly in the Caira village area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1700<\/strong> Leaflets in English were dropped on forward positions of 2 LIR and 1 RIrF. They harped on about Churchill\u2019s 1940 speech, saying that he had nothing to offer except blood and tears. Also, it compared Allied bombing losses and the slight slowing up of the advance in Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three PoWs were taken from 3 Coy 115 Recce after a patrol clash at 832222 in which grenades were thrown. Two of 6 Innisks patrol are missing. Slight mortaring of brigade area during the night. Three A.\/Tk guns from Troop 254 A\/Tk Battery RA moved into position in area 837228 to support 6 Innisks in case of an attack by tanks. This is a feasible proposition as there is a run in for tanks along the gully leading from Massa Albanete (g 8321).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enemy movement and patrolling was heard on the brigade front. As a further deterrent to any tank threat, four SP guns moved into position in support of 6 Innisks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mortaring of forward companies of 6 Innisks during the day and general shelling of the remainder of brigade areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very sharp concentration was put down on Brigade HQ at 0500hrs but caused no casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very little activity during the night and mostly on the 6 Innisks front. Perhaps it should, be noted that on this part of the brigade front, only a few hundred yards separate the two front lines and active movement and patrolling is continually observed and unavoidable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was a patrol clash at 828226 and one OR was lightly wounded and the 4.2 and 3\u201d mortars fired on enemy positions early on in the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intermittent shelling and mortaring of bttn positions, Brigade HQ and Caira during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1515<\/strong> Heavy shelling Bttn HQ 1 RIrF, which lasted until 1700hrs. 2 LIR had heavy mortaring about the same time and three men were wounded. 6 Innisks was heavily mortared as well at 1515hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0010 <\/strong>A visit to the Bttn HQ was paid by Major Clarke and a Captain of the Sappers recce party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0200\u20130520<\/strong> Our mortars had many shoots at Knoll 833222.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0300<\/strong> During one of the shoots, an explosion was seen by the right forward coy who believed it was an ammunition dump that had been hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0520<\/strong> None enemy were seen carrying rations to a suspected cookhouse on Saddle. Our mortars put down 18 bombs on the area and OPs reported they were on the target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a quiet morning. A Coy checked the rations brought up the previous night and found that whilst no food had arrived, they did not lack water as they had received twice their amount. The reason for this was that some mules had to be shot owing to injuries being received when they strayed into a minefield. This also caused panic to the rest of the mule train. Still the coy did not starve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cigarette situation in the bttn was very good. D Coy sent their NAAFI issue of cigarettes back to A Echelon. One blanket per man and most of the tools were bundled with the view to returning them at night to B Echelon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0930<\/strong> A Polish Colonel and a Staff Captain, accompanied by the Brigade Major, visited Bttn HQ. Plans for a proposed attack on Phantom Ridge were discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1200-1750<\/strong> A considerable number of mortar bombs fell in the bttn area. Our 3\u201d and 4.2 mortars saw to it that the enemy was amply repaid. We suffered no casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2200-2330<\/strong> There were more mortar activity on both sides and flares and MG fire in 11 (British) Infantry Brigade area. Movement of MT in the direction of Villa San Lucia was also heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

San Michele \u2013<\/strong> During the day, Major Maxwell started a \u201cfly blitz\u201d at A Echelon. CQMS McQuaid was apparently in a merry mood, wishing that everybody was dead or \u201cknocked off\u201d soon so that he could put their kit in order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confirmation of this can be gained as it would entail a minor attack to penetrate the enemy\u2019s forward positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1900<\/strong> The enemy\u2019s reaction to our ranging on his positions was a considerable number of mortar bombs on our area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heavy shelling of 6 Innisks\u2019 area during early part of the night. Three men killed. Counter mortar targets engaged. Day comparatively quiet. Slight shelling and mortaring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One man wounded from shelling. 28 Brigade inform this HQ that a party of 20 Germans was seen moving down the slopes of hill from pt 708 (G8326). Nothing resulted from this information. Normal routine patrols and listening posts during the night. Brigade Commander discussions future training with Commanders 1 RIrF and 6 Innisks and second in command 2 LIR. Schemes and future programmes are discussed with a view to training in cooperation with tanks and also river crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0215<\/strong> A Coy patrol reported in. No contact was made, but sounds were heard along enemy FDLS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0345 \u2013 0430<\/strong> More bursts of MG fire along FDLs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0510<\/strong> The remains of three ORs were found near Signals Exchange, who belong to D Coy\u2019s mule party and had been caught by the mortaring of Bttn HQ at 2230 \u2013 2359 hrs the previous night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early in the morning, the CO had arrived at A Echelon and inspected the area before going on leave. This echelon was taken by surprise at 1845 hours when a barrage of empty shells landed amongst the personnel whilst having their tea. This was not appreciated as there were several near misses. This had repercussions on the Jeep train which left half an hour late. It had been decided that the bttn would have between 3\u20137 days reserve rations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0040<\/strong> Patrol (Hyde) returned and reported having seen movement of a possible enemy standing patrol in the area of 832224 and having heard stone positions being built in area at the foot of pt 593. No contact was made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smoke will be put down in the Rapido Valley, only from generators and will not be fired by 25 pounders. This is a precautionary measure for the enemy will realise that a relief is taking place if 25 pounder smoke is fired from the valley, the procedure having been adopted once too often before. San Michele \u2013<\/strong> There was slight shelling of A Echelon during the day but no casualties were caused. The Jeeps and mules left at the usual time, accompanied by Lieut Myles, who went up to B Coy, of which is now 2.i.c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrol from 6 Innisks was grenaded on approaching Phantom House (G828226) and an enemy patrol made contact with a standing patrol in front of 6 Innisks left forward platoon at G834224. An exchange of fire took place and grenades were thrown by both sides but there were no casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our heavy mortars and 3\u201d mortars replied and in addition 3\u201d mortars 6 Innisks kept up a steady harassing fire on the Phantom Ridge sector (G828226).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relief of 6 Innisks by 14 Polish Infantry Brigade commenced about midnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0530<\/strong> Col Baker visited HQ to see the Battery Commander of the 10 Field Battery, 17 Field Battery, RA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

San Michele \u2013<\/strong> CSM Gibson, who was in control of the jeep and mule trains arrived back but had not received any news of the missing jeeps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The right coy area was spasmodically mortared throughout and our mortars replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0110<\/strong> The remainder of the relieving unit, followed closely by relieving A\/Tk personnel passed Wrights Corner, where owing to the mules and some Polish personnel getting into wrong coys, not to mention the language difficulty, there was a certain amount of confusion. This was eventually cleared up by Captain Griffiths and they all proceeded on their way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0155<\/strong> The enemy shelled the bttn area and 4.2 mortars opened up in reply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0200<\/strong> B Coy reported that the relief had been completed and that they were on their way down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0210<\/strong> HQ Coy personnel left its area and at the same time it was discovered at Wrights Corner that the personnel detailed to guide the bttn across the Rapido valley had misunderstood their orders and had gone back guiding Polish Jeeps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0310<\/strong> C Coy relief completed and they moved off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0345<\/strong> D Coy having changed over, left Bttn HQ area complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0350<\/strong> One officer and orderly from all coys were ordered to close on Bttn HQ and, at this time, the command of the bttn area passed from 6 Innisks to 14 Infantry Bttn. The CO and the remainder of the bttn personnel left Bttn HQ area in Jeeps and picked up TC personnel at the three posts on the way down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Little regret was felt by the personnel of the bttn as they lengthened the distance between them and Monte Castellone, where they had spent the most uncomfortable time in their army service. To the older members of the bttn, it had a reminiscence of the time spent on Grandstand, North Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rapido Valley \u2013 The journey across the Rapido valley by the marching personnel was not without incident as some of them were shelled and others managed to get mixed up with other outgoing units of the Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0545<\/strong> The personnel, who had already arrived at Inferno Quarry embossed and moved for the new area<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0700<\/strong> Route Six \u2013 The column halted off Route Six where breakfast was served. It was then found that C and D Coys had failed to arrive at the em-busing point before sunrise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1000<\/strong> Formicola \u2013 The main body of the bttn arrived in the Formicola area. Elements of C and D Coys arrived during the rest of the day and by 2000 hrs, there were only 15 ORs unaccounted for. These turned up during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remainder of the day was spent settling down in the new area and where possible to make good some of the sleep lost during the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A divisional training programme was issued on laying down the policy for future training of the division. The first four days in the concentration area to be devoted to interior economy and then a period of training covering  a period of ten days dealing with River Crossings, Village Fighting, Cooperation with tanks and two brigade attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0140<\/strong> C Coy relieved by a coy of 16 Polish Battalion and moved to new area, arriving about 0730 hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0145<\/strong> Support weapons of 17 Polish Battalion took over tasks of ours which were withdrawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0230<\/strong> Reps of 17 Polish Battalion to all coys (less C).  Each presented with copy of local admin arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 Innisks \u2013 FORMICOLA.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0700<\/strong> Reveille \u2013 The day was spent in resting and in admin checks. A bath house had been prepared by the Pioneer Platoon and was put to good use by the bttn. A canteen had been opened up in the village by the Church Army and everybody was surprised to find it was run by a young lady from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1000<\/strong> Allocations were received for a cinema and ENSA show at Capua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1800<\/strong> The Band piped the Retreat. The kilts of the pipers caused quite a stir, among the local Italians. Some of the girls adopted the old Roman custom of throwing flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 LIR \u2013 IN THE FIELD (ITALY).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

0230<\/strong> Bttn HQ main party, under command Lieut Seymour, left Bttn HQ area to proceed via mule track to the Inferno 891235 where bttn transport was waiting. Total bttn relief completed and coys withdrawn from forward area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0405<\/strong> CO and control group left Bttn HQ area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0430<\/strong> Bttn main party arrived at Inferno and proceeded to new area on transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0730<\/strong> Bttn HQ, all coys and B Echelon now situated in area of Pontelatone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interior economy. Increased allotment of leave are granted. Troops can go to Bari for 7 days or the Divisional Rest Camp at Maiori for 4 days. Allotments of mobile cinemas, seats for cinema and ENSA shows are available every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canteens are set up in every bttn area for the benefit of the troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day was passed in a similar way as the previous day. There were the usual recreational parties to Capua. KD was issued to all personnel. The cooks had settled in by this time and were producing some very good meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much trouble from mule and Jeep blocks on march across valley.  Rear coys were not clear by daylight and were shelled.  D Coy had one officer (Lt JV Baker) slightly wounded (remained on duty) and two ORs wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0330<\/strong> A telephone message was sent out to coys increasing the day leave to Naples from three to twelve per coy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1000<\/strong> The CO commenced an inspection of all coy areas, during the afternoon an ENSA show was held in the coy areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1800<\/strong> Once again, the Band played Retreat. In the evening, the officers held a party in the Mess which was attended by the Brigade Commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This day was observed as a Sunday owing to the fact that training was to commence on the following day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0930<\/strong> RC service was held in the local church and the C of E service was held on the football ground near S Coy area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the services, the CO addressed the bttn and reviewed the past month\u2019s events and gave an outline of the training to come. The most favourable view was taken when he promised that training would not interfere with leave parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1800<\/strong> The Brigade Pipes Band piped the Retreat on the football field watched by Divisional and Brigade Commanders and many of the officers and men of the bttn. The turnout was very good and the performance excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0730<\/strong> The bttn em-bused at the MT lines for the first of a series of exercises. Today\u2019s exercise was to practise river crossings on the River Volturno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

0900<\/strong> The bttn em-bused at the Watermanship Training Ground on the river where RE officers and men gave demonstrations. The period devoted to knot tying would have brought tears to the eyes of any boy scouts at the way the men became entangled in the ropes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1400<\/strong> All men of the bttn crossed the river in assault boats. This, on the whole, was very well executed but did not compare with the University Boat Race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1520<\/strong> The bttn em-bused and arrived back in the area at 1630hrs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
