{"id":1247,"date":"2018-01-18T14:48:32","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T14:48:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/?page_id=1247"},"modified":"2026-03-31T08:56:33","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T08:56:33","slug":"signal-corporal","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/index.php\/first-world-war\/signal-corporal\/","title":{"rendered":"Signal Corporal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Captain Ernest May wrote the story of the 2\/18th London Regiment (2nd Battalion), London Irish Rifles during the First World War, from its formation as a new Battalion in the first few weeks of the war in 1914 until their dispersal during 1918.&nbsp;He was a Signal Corporal with the Battalion throughout the war and would later serve with the Regiment at home during the Second World War.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"474\" height=\"706\" src=\"https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/signal-corporal0001-Copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11877\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/signal-corporal0001-Copy.jpg 474w, https:\/\/www.londonirishrifles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/signal-corporal0001-Copy-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">In 1926, the author was tasked by the Regimental Association with writing a history of the 2nd Battalion and was able to complete the book 46 years later in 1972.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>\u201cOn 31 August 1914, authority was received for the 2nd&nbsp;Battalion to be raised and it was complete on 5th&nbsp;September. Coming from the harsh conditions of Macedonia, in Egypt, we found condition of such comfort as could perhaps not be equaled anywhere else where our army was engaged. Moscar, itself, was a permanent camp of tents with ample accommodation for everyone and water to be had by merely turning on a trap.
